How can I tell if my bike is leaning too far on the kick stand? Its an 06 XB9SX how far should it lean?

Far enough that a stiff breeze won't knock it over, not so far that it sinks in the tarmac on a 90 degree day...

Okay, so maybe there are stupid questions... ;)

If it's the stock suspension and the stock kickstand, it's leaning the correct amount. It might seem like it leans a little further than it should (I thought my Sportster leaned more than it should for the first few months). Keep in mind that you want to be able to park it on a hill and not have it fall over if someone bumps into it.

Thanks. I think I am just getting worried that I will find it on its side one day when I walk into the garage. Any worries about the bolt breaking on an 06?

Have you ever seen the lean angle of an S2 on it's sidestand?

I just googled an image of an S2 and an XB looks normal I guess.

Not enough IMHO. After all my NEW Super TT fell over while running when I went to put on my helmet on the third day I had it.

But then again a friend Honda sank out of sight in the tarmac one day and crash on a someone else's car!

If you can look at another XB or check that bolt that is in the kickstand. I noticed mine leaning a little further than normal. I rode to work only to notice that my kickstand was gone when I got there. Well the base was still there but the kickdown part was gone. Fix it BEFORE you have to fix your bike after it falls.

LOL, as my 1,000 mile ride progressed, i "Thought" it was leaning more and more, when I got back to town I decided it was TOO far, I checked, the bolts were backed out about 1/2 way...scary. As a note, the kickstand recall had been done not too long ago, and the threads had no locktight on them LOCKTIGHT my friends!

Thats what I was worried about Mesa, But I checked the bolt and it does not seem loose or anything. After looking at other Buells mine seems to be in the norm.

My '06 Ss had the bolt try to back out as well. Dunno how the other bikes are set up, but once my bolt backed out so far, the spring mechanism began catching funny, and the stand wouldn't fully lower without me wiggling it. That's how i knew something was up. I thought it had been looking "lower" than normal, but I had convinced myself it was just my imagination.

When checking for tightness, be sure to put it up on a rear wheel stand or get someone to hold it up, something to take the weight off the side stand. I couldn't budge it otherwise, despite it being half loose.

As a cheap alternative to wheel stands I use a length of 1/2 inch aluminum bar through the axle and place them on jack stands. has worked GREAT for over 2 years...but yes you will need to lift the bike, you DONT want to STRESS that area, its ALUMINUM and the bolt holes WILL elongate if you force them. LOCKTIGHT as much as you can

I read the answers given for your legitimate question. If I had a question like that I would go to the area Buell dealer and look at the bikes on the show room floor and compare, or compare it to some of the Buell's in the area.

I certainly wouldn't rely someone who hasn't seen bike in person to give an opinion.

Thanks Bcordb3, I did take notice to other bikes as well as pictures from dealers/google etc. They all look the same. I will be keeping an eye on the bolt however, because I have heard of them snapping but I thought it was mostly on the 03s

My 04 snapped, but then again I used to put it down at stoplights and sit on the bike putting all my weight on the kick stand.

LOL, my MSF instructors would chew you a new one over that. They didn't even want the bike in neutral. 1st gear with the clutch, in case you have to make an unexpected getaway.

Personal riding style but yes I agree. I SAW a guy get rear ended because he wasn't watching. Granted, a little different BUT had he seen the guy not slowing down he could have taken action. I ALMOST got rear ended the same way on my Hawk, he finally saw me as I was exiting his path and we both went different directions...I would imagine he had to clean his shorts after...

I cringe when MSF instructors tell students the best place to put your helmet when you are off the bike is on the ground. It's true, no doubt, but it goes against the old superstition of never putting your helmet on the ground (or a bar top!).
