ok for starters I don't care allot about mileage but I care a little. I have the race ecm d&d muffler and the k&n air filter in there all of which I know leans towards performance and not mileage. I have a 3.8 gallon tank only use the highest grade 93 octane gas. I get 90 miles too a full tank of gas before my gas light comes on. Does this sound normal? I am not real mechanical of a person I have been planning too swap out the spark plugs. Just did the 5000mile oil change with new filter as well. The bike runs fantastic just thought the mileage was a bit low. | ||

Vic, my fuel light comes on between 100 and 110, so you aren't too far off. With an estimation that you have burned 2.5 gallons with your fuel light comes on, it equates to 36 MPG. That is a tad low, but not terrible IMO. The best thing is to divide the miles traveled by the amount of gas at fill-up to get an accurate MPG. Mine has never been below 40 MPG and occasionally is just above 50 MPG. Typically it is btw 44 and 46. Also, the more your engine breaks in, you will see an improvement in MPG. | ||

I have on '06 xb9sx with a spec ops pipe, race ecm, and k&n filter. I run 89 octane and regularly get 155 to 162 before my gas light comes on. On a recent trip from the Atlanta area to Boone, NC via the Blue Ridge Pkwy I averaged 53mpg over the 850 mile trip. My gas mileage got noticeable better after 6000 miles on the odometer. My mileage suffers most at speeds above 70. | ||

Be careful topping off as I find on my '06 9SX it surges for about 10 miles after topping off. I am assuming there is too much gas in the tank and somehow it is affecting getting gas to the engine. It is pretty annoying actually. | ||

Mine uselly avrages about 51 mpg. I have got as good as 63 on a trip. Last week comming home from Suches. I filled up before geting on I85. stopped 102 miles later steady 80 mph and put in 1.8 gal 56.6 mpg. XB9S with drummer,and race ecm and filter.Also had on buell sattle bags and tail trunk.  | ||

Urban, that seems really high...what is your riding style? I am literally out of gas between 140 and 150 miles. And I know cause it happened last week...again (I hate to admit). | ||

How many miles on your bike Vic? I'm getting (according to how hard I ride) between 50 and 60 MPG. I've got an 03 XB9S, with Buell Race Kit. Usually about 140 to 145 when the light comes on. | ||

I'm not super aggressive and I pretty much stick to back roads whenever possible. Wheelies are not my style, but I will crack open the throttle when appropriate.I wasn't real impressed with the mileage when I first brought it home but I generally would get 138 to 145 before the gas light came on. I started using Syn 3 oil from HD at the 5000 mile checkup. The first time I got low to mid 50's in mileage I thought it was a fluke, but the bike has continued to receive the the same gas mileage. I broke the motor in by riding the bike the way I would normally ride. I always gave it a thorough warm up before riding and during break in I avoided running the bike at constant engine speeds. I have been really happy with the mileage since I do tend to knock out 250 to 300 miles on a Saturday or Sunday. What is your riding style? How much interstate do you do? I find my worst mileage is on the interstate where the air always feels more turbulent. | ||

I am pretty hard on the throttle and I do more highway than street--at least on the weekdays. I go about 26 miles to work round trip with more than 20 on the freeway. A couple times on mountain day trips I got 55 and 56 MPG. I thought it was a fluke and it pretty much was. The next time I went that route I was down to 40 MPG--but that was on a weekday afternoon with no traffic or buddies to slow me down. The XB was wound up for most of that trip...man, that was fun! | ||

Traded my 03 XB9R last month and miss its gas mileage. My fuel light would come on at 121. I ran it out of gas once, fortunately there was a gas station at the bottom of the hill. 141 miles, not counting the coasting and short push. Hope none of you are filling to the top of the fill hole, but stop when the gas gets to the top of the frame hole inside. I did that early on and she sputtered quite a bit till the level dropped. I generally get about 50 unless I'm riding in town a lot. I live in a small town so it's always 3rd and 4th... Then I get about 34-40. Coming back from Vegas 2up into a headwind at 100MPH I got about 48mpg for about three hours. | ||

It's difficult to compare total miles traveled on a tank when you are talking about an '03 XB9 and an '06. The '06 has a tad more fuel capacity, owing to the fact that the air intake is no longer routed through the frame in the '06. | ||

I have just over 6000miles on my bike. I sometimes ride a bit aggressive but not over the edge. I fill but only too the lower hole not over. I don't believe I have ever overfilled the tank. I appreciate the responses and info. I am changing out my plugs next week and I will ride a tank of gas in normal mode  and see what I get. I don't tuck in behind the fairing much as I am in Daytona and there is allot of stop and go which could contribute too the lower mileage as well. | ||

110-120 light comes on. xb12r, air-filter and drummer. but if i really been riding hard on the twisties and getting over the 100 mark gas light comes on around 90 some miles. | ||

Vic, have you had the TPS reset and the timing also? I'd suggest just as you are doing, check the spark plugs and ALSO the plug wires. I had one that was rubbing on a bracket around the throttle body. You've got the stock tire size too right? Just checking the basics. | ||

Don't go by the light. I've owned three race-kitted XB9s, and all three had low-fuel lights that performed significantly differently from eachother. All three bikes routinely went +50 MPG. Calculate your actual mileage, then decide whether you have a fuel-consumption problem or a low-fuel light problem.
