Which Penske Shock should I buy for my XB12R?

The 8100 Series has only low speed compression dampening, the 8600 has both high and low speed dampening.

I ride on the street and do a half dozen track days a year. I am an intermediate rider, according to the local racing organization I'd be classed as a medium slow rider, but am on the cusp of medium fast. It is doubtful I will ever progress beyond medium fast.

Lindemann Suspension has the 8100 for just over $700 the cheapest I've found the 8600 is around $1000. Given my situation is there a benefit to the 8600 and is it worth the extra cost?

I really don't think the high and low speed damping adjustments are all that usable unless your track you are riding on has changes from bumpy to smooth or if you ride on a super motard track where you are running WFO in 1st and 2nd gear and then FULL braking.

It's a pain to setup and adjust properly.

Kind of hard to justify the slightly more complicated tuning in my not so humble opinion.

The Ohlins and their mounting are more complex, actually recommending mounting the adjusters on the undertail piece.

The Elka appear to be a nice shock but I've heard their quality control is not up with the others.

Wilbers are great shock, BMW riders who swear by them. They are not sold in the US (they are still serviced here).

The AST looks good and I believe in supporting the board's sponsors, I also believe in doing business close to home.

It's hard to argue with the cost, quality and performance of a Penske. They are common at most tracks which means lots of knowledge and support in getting things set up right.

In writing this I think I've made up my mind...the Penske 8100!

You should contact the suppliers about adjustable length shocks and see is the minimum length is close to the scg.

"guru". It can be hard enough to get a standard (high speed only) shock dialed in on a race weekend. The old story
of thousand way adjustable shocks having 999 wrong setting comes to mind. Granted there are varying degrees
of wrongness, but if you could get rid of 500 wrong settings right out of the box why wouldn't you? Assuming that
your local tracks have a consistent paving surface of course.

You might consider sending your factory shock to Ed at Trackside Engineering to have it resprung to your weight. He dials in most of the MidWest CCS racers suspensions, mine included and a MUCH lower price that buying a Penske.

Just thought I'd mention... The standard shocks have low speed adjustment only. The "extra" adjustment you get with the high end models is the high speed adjustment.

Low speed damping is for undulations, the feeling as you roll the bike in, throttle transitions... The high speed is for bumps. If the track you race on is bumpy I think you would benefit greatly from the higher spec shock with high speed damping. There's still the issue of wrapping your head around the way they work and how to use them but if you can get it close I think you'll notice it : ).
