Is there no trap door on the XB case? The first Sportsters were made like that but soon changed to the more accessible "present" design. I find it hard to believe HD has gone with a "split the case" trans access.

There is not trap door on non-race prepped XB engines. A trap door can be added, but there are hurdles to overcome. Similar to getting a belly pan for track use. Maybe a trap door is the "big surprise" for the 2004 models????? Hmmmmm. |

Result of my goodwill appeal for warranty through the dealer / HD channel. Keep in mind this was just to cover the $80 gasket set: DENIED Reason I was given: I did not take it to a Dealer to have them perform the work, and they will not consider customer repaired issues. The dealer also mentioned that even if they (the dealer) had performed the work, it may have still been denied. I won't comment further at this time.

I wouldn't have expected anything less. The time to ask for a goodwill warranty extension is before you tear into the bike and before you purchase new parts. But hey, it never hurts to ask. |

Back on the road, bike run's (and shifts) better than ever. The retaining collar bolt must have been loose and backing off for quite sometime, as it shifts like I remember when it was new. Come to think about it, the shift quality has very gradually been going downhill since about 5K, but it was so gradual I hardly noticed. Now that it is fixed, there's a noticeable improvement. Here's a question I've always wondered: Does the positioning of the piston ring gaps move with use, or do they stay in the same position as assembled? Upon disassembly, the ring gaps were no where near where the manual says they should be. Anyone know for sure? |

Question: If a dealer shop certified employee works on their own bike after hours in the dealership shop and then finds the above problem, could it then be considered a valid warranty claim? Just wondering where the line is drawn? |

Answer: No. Does the capacity to fraudulently represent that the did the work "on company time" exist? Sure it does, just like anywhere else. If you wonder how seriosly Harley-Davidson takes warranty fraud ask one of America's Top Dealers who, as part of his plea bargain to keep his franchise, had to deliver a "don't even think about trying warranty fraud" message to the assembled masses. It's larcency...pure and simple. Court P.S. - and there are a couple dandy "out of the system" tricks currently in process that really irk me...PERSOANLLY. I just have a root problem with a guy who drives a Ferrari and rips Buell off for $500 at a pop. |

XB9, Believe me, if your dealer had repaired the bike for a screw that came out, it would have been paid for by the company. However, it is impossible for legal reasons for any company to reimburse a customer who does his or her own service. |

I really didn't expect anything, the dealer suggested we give it a shot. It's just ironic under the circumstances that it was just two months out of warranty. My luck, i guess If it was still under warranty, I would have sent it to the dealer. I keep going back to the thought that this should never have happened.... that's the sad part for me AND Buell. I've got a BIG black mark now on my ownership experience. I WAS feeling pretty good about it. Hopefully the powers to be at HD & Buell will learn from this, as my experience with the "quality of build" on this motorcycle has been less than I had hoped for. Not bad, better than the past, but not there yet IMHO. Hopefully, there aren't others with this particular problem, but at least if someone else has the same symptoms and they see these posts, they will know where to look. Save someone else the hassle. That's the only reason I started this thread, to see if someone had similar symptoms like this and could possibly give a tip to what was the cause. I'm putting it all behind me. I've learned from it, feel confident that it has been assembled properly, and I really want to focus on the enjoyment I get from riding it. Hoping the next 18K will be smoother sailing. Nothing will take away from how fun this thing is to ride! |
