I have been getting the check engine light on a 2003 XB9SL. The only indication of something wrong is the light. The bike runs fine and the gas mileage is normal. The light comes on and then goes out only to come back on again at some later time. I checked for for codes and got a 24 and 25 indicating a problem with the front and rear ignition coils. I reseated the connectors on the ECM and on the Coil. The battery cables are tight and free of corrosion. The light still came on for a time and would then go out. Since the ignition coil was fairly inexpensive, I replaced the coil. I thought the problem was fixed and then the light came back on. Same codes. I got looking at my wiring harness running from the ECM connectors and discovered that the shock reservoir had worn through the harness and insulation of the wire that goes to the oxygen sensor. I cut back the harness casing and fixed the wire and then rewrapped the wiring harness. I hoped that I had discovered and solved my problem. Last night the check engine light came on again. It was on for no more than a minute and then went out again. The bike has 16500 miles on it right now and has been trouble free until now. I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

If the light goes off and stays off after you turn on the ignition then you should be ok. The ECM will clear any historic trouble code after a series of trouble free restarts with engine operation over 30 seconds. I think it is 30 starts. |

After changing the ignition relay and putting everything back together, I have put 45 miles on it and have not seen the check engine light. I am hoping that the ignition relay fixed the problem. |

Well, today my check engine light came on at least seven times so whatever it is isn't fixed. The light comes on for as long as several minutes and then goes out. It doesn't seem to be caused by anything I do or encounter on the road. The bike still runs perfectly as near as I can tell. The codes on it are for the air temp sensor, and the front and rear coils. The air temp sensor is probably from the time I turned the key while the air box was removed and I was checking the harness to the coils. The air temp sensor was disconnected. Any ideas what could be causing this? |
