I went to commute with my wife to college today. the college is 45 miles from home.
43 miles from home the clutch started to slip. 43.2 miles from home the clutch would no longer engage.

Being a cash poor disabled student I got to spend $100 I couldn't afford to get my bike back home.

On top of all this my wife missed work and we both missed class because we spent all day getting vehicles shuffled
to get my bike home safely.

My bike is down until the first of the month (minimum) since I cannot afford the local dealer's prices $20.50 ea
for fiber discs (x7) and another $8.50 (x6) for the steels.
Or better yet the American Sport Bike $130 for the kit (BTW great price Al!)

I have the tool and the know-how. what I don't have is a clutch. Does anyone have a clutch laying around that we
could swing some sort of deal on?

The price of gas is going to kill me driving the car for the rest of the month. I'm in a real catch-22 here.

Does anyone know if any Sportster clutch parts are compatible? If yes, maybe you can pick one up used (eBay or locally?).

Wow, I love BadWeB. within 1 hour of posting I had 3 offers to help.

Thats Amazing. /clipart{beer2}

I really hated to make the post, being the proud individual i am,(I have been called "fiercely independent" by more than
one of my health care professionals) but I am in a fairly tight spot financially right now.

I know, I know, who isn't...right? that's why I hated so much to ask. Kind of humbling when you try so hard to
do everything yourself.

Dave, Fritz, I PM'd you both. Thanks guys!

Jerry and Steve, Thanks, for your incredibly generous offers. You guys rock.

I have the tools, time, and the know-how to swap the clutch out...Just no clutch, and
very little cash. (story of my life)

Jack, without the tool to compress the spring you can't pull the clutch out. I do appreciate the offer.

maybe someone else in/ around Somersworth NH has the tool and is willing to help? even if it doesn't work out you have my
heartfelt thanks....really.

Skully, Saintly says 91-06 sportster clutches are the same, at least on the Barnett clutch. In all honesty I trust badwebbers
more in regards to honesty, and for quick shipping if it comes to that. ebay is a last resort in my book, but I am looking.

Well it looks like I'm going to be able to shake enough cash loose for the kit Saintly offered me. Thanks again Fritz!

Then I'll still need a quart of lube as well as a primary cover gasket and the adjustment cover gasket. I'll have to price
them now and see what they run...

I can't thank you guys enough. Really. Like I said, as a proud individual it is hard to go "hat in hand" and ask for help,
but you guys make it much ...not really easier... but more bearable because I know that most of you understand where
I'm coming from and that I'm really not looking for a hand out so much as a hand up. The distinction is very important
to me.

On a lighter note:
You know, if my bike was a run of the mill Harley it probably wouldn't have toasted the clutch as quickly as it did
since it would have so much less power and torque. Sometimes motor upgrades can work against you.

Thanks again guys.

The outpouring of generosity is bigger even than it looks here on badweb. There have been offers to help made by badwebbers
that chose not to post on the thread too. I am absolutely floored by this.

Every one of you should be proud of yourselves. Even if I did not need to avail myself of your assistance the offer was deeply
appreciated.

I'm going to have to figure out something special I can do for you guys.
It may take me a bit, but I have a couple of ideas.....

I went ahead and put the order in with Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike for the primary gasket, clutch cover gasket and shift shaft seal.

So, all I have to do now is get tranny fluid, (on edit: added tranny fluid to my order from American Sport Bike)
disassemble the clutch, and wait for parts to arrive.

It's coming around, now I just have to be patient. luckily rain is in the forecast for the next couple of days.

6K or so Tim, 4k of those are mine. however I figure that there was a bit of fun had with it while it was still at Hal's
that probably wasn't gentle on the clutch. That and the fact the previous owner may not have been the most expert of
riders. You know the type, more in love with the idea of riding than actually doing it. I should have a lot more miles
on it, but I won't ride if I'm not 100% and there was all the trouble with getting the title into MY hands....
excuses, excuses.... I need to ride more, and I'm going to be able to now stretching my commutes into nice long rides.
I have a few different routes picked out already that would make you drool (having seen the roads in and around Ames)

Anyway, I had not noticed the clutch slipping, but I don't spend a lot of time trying to clutch the front up either.

Irregardless I have great faith in the quality of Barnett clutches. I even have the barnett clutch spring sitting on a
shelf here. It was waiting until I had a reason to open the primary. It's why I already have the spring compressor.

I expect the new clutch to last me a long time. In retrospect it will probably make the bike quicker than it was since
it has obviously been slipping (too little for me to catch it) for a while.

If it wasn't for BadWeB,and My Uncle LJ (who loaned me his new to him truck so that I could get home and get what
I needed to pick my bike up) this week would already be an incredible disaster.

Status update:

Sent money off for Fritz (Saintly) who is trying to get the clutch shipped directly to me on my word that I would send
off payment....what can I say? In today's world that's just plain unbelievable service!

Placed order with Al and Joanne last night, got email from Al this morning verifying that everything was in stock and
that I would have a tracking number later today....Once again, WOW. Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike set
the bar for customer service. Every time I deal with them I come away from the experience feeling good about it. that
is getting rare in a world where turning a quick buck seems to trump customer service. (I hate the phone systems
that have become the norm when dealing with most companies...press 1 to...press 2 to... AGGGGGHHHHH!)

Oh yeah since it is officially "talk like a pirate day" Avast there matey's, me Buell is making headway!

I agree 100%. Plus they're everywhere you don't expect. My Riders Edge instructor turned out to be Wolfridgerider. Mike, a guy I've mountain biked with (albeit way behind him) turned out to be Mikef5000 here. Not to mention the occassional Bueller I've met in my travels around Ohio.

Here is the latest update:

The gaskets and tranny fluid (formula +) I ordered from Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike came in the mail Tuesday

The clutch I ordered from Saintly at Saintly cycles came in the mail (priority mail) today! (I'll be sending you some more
money to cover the extra shipping Fritz. There is no reason that should be on you.

So if all goes well tomorrow I should have my bike back up and running!

ONCE AGAIN Thank you to all of the people that offered to help. Even if I didn't need what you offered I truly
appreciate the offers you made. Your generosity will not be forgotten.

This can already be chalked up as another BadWeB success story!
