I need a clutch cable for my '03 9R. Do all the XB line of bikes - 9 and 12 - use the same clutch cable? The resident parts genius at the local HD dealership could only find the cable for the '03 9S. (he said the 9S was 1200cc in size -when will they care enough to learn??). He said the parts catalog didn't list a clutch cable for the 9R before the 2005 model. Is there a good - and cheaper -aftermarket cable available? |

The R cable is longer. Tell him to order the 05 cable. It's the correct cable. |

original part number was 38627-02A, then was 38627-02B, but now is a 38627-02C all the R's are the same, the S's are different length dont you mean the R cables are shorter than the S? (Message edited by no_rice on September 07, 2007) |

Nope there longer. Thats why some people with Cross Roads on there XB S model put R cables on to get some slack. |

Thank you, guys. To clarify, it doesn't matter the engine size, all the Rs have the same clutch cable, correct? And 38627-02C is what I should order? |

hmm, guess i have never measured them, just figured that the forks are the same and the only difference is that the S's have risers and taller bar so that would make its cable longer. got me on that one i guess. and yes Glen, all the R's have the same clutch cable. the C part # is the newest superceeded number. if they have to order one that will be the one. the only way those other numbers would be useful is to see if there might be one laying around there that doesnt show up in there inventory because they use the C number now. |

Do the newer cables have a boot that actually keeps the water out of the transmission, or is the zip tie still necessary at the top of the boot? |

Can you get just the boot? |

Good question, that is all I need. Mine got chewed up, and it was 100% my fault. |

Be very careful when installing the threaded end into the clutch case. The threaded part breaks very easily. Turn it in by hand and after it bottoms out, only turn it one flat more (of the hex) and call it good. Doesn't hurt to put some sealer on the threads either. |

This is a very old thread, but it includes incorrect information that a customer of ours recently used, so I'm posting an update here. I know I've done this similarly in some other thread, but bad info should be corrected or deleted where possible. The R cable is NOT longer than the S cable. It is shorter, by just under three inches.
