ok im riding a little honda shadow right now i like it ok but im looking for something much quicker seeing as how this was my first bike. money is tight for me. my question is there is a huge price difference in the xb9 and 12, is the power difference really noticeable or am i going to be perfectly happy with an xb9?

$ wise, depends if your talking new or not. If so yeah sure the scg is more. But if your going down the used route, 9's are fun, but 12's are great. BTW I love the looks of the XB9SX.

I prefer the 9 engine over the 12, I think it is a bit more linear in the power delivery and the CityX, while not fast compared to a lot of bikes out there is plenty quick and GOBS of fun. It is an incredibly balanced bike.

Wow,
I just made the jump from a Honda Shadow 1100 to an XB9S. I sold the 97 shadow for roughly the same price as the 03 XB(I picked it up in NJ). Bikes tend to go for more up here where the snow flies.
I would highly recommend the 9 as you can pick up an older model for pretty cheap and the insurance savings is considerable. The only real trade off for the 03 is the weak belt, but I think you can use that as a bargaining tool when purchasing and it can be remedied later.
As far as performance, the only gage I have is riding an 02 M2 Cyclone which is beefed up, and I think my bike is a bit faster.
I miss the shadow from time to time, but all I have to do is twist the throttle of my 9, and those feelings get left in the dust. I absolutely love this bike!!!

How tall are you? The Scg is lower to the ground and has a lower seat. The CityX has the standard suspension, and a seat that is three or four inches taller than the Scg. The S has the same suspension as the CityX, and a seat that is 1 inch taller than the Scg and two or three inches shorter than the CityX. All three seats are interchangeable.

I went with a 9 because it's fast enough and the insurance is drastically cheaper in most states when the motor is less than 1000cc.

And the CityX has Black engine cases ;) I know I have had fun on my CityX. You should see the look on the faces I get when I push her through her paces.

I haven't ridden a 9, but talking strictly price, I got some serious sticker shock when I started insurance shopping for my 12Ss. Ouch.

If money's tight, that's one more reason to seriously consider a 9.

I bought a XB9SX and a KLR 250 for less then an XB12. Neener neener neeneeeeer! : )

(of course every spare moment over the past two weeks has been spent trying to get that 1985 250 running right again, and every afternoon on ebay on the parts hunt).

I don't have a City-X, but I do have an XB9S.
I've surprised more than a few people on "faster" bikes.

ok so most the votes go for the cityx gotcha. so i can just pop a scg seat on it and it will make it lower? because i have a pretty short inseam. and when i sat the cityx i was just toes. it would be nice to get a bit more foot on the ground although not that important. thanks for the help guys. oh yeah and one more thing. they have 07`s sitting arround in the warehouse and are going to cut a bit off the price to get rid of it. should i get the 07 or the 08 on the cityx? if its up to price how much lower should the 07 be b4 i get it?

The 9 might be cheaper, but so is a V6. To me the 9 was settling and I knew in my heart that going for the 12 was like picking the Mustang or Camaro with the V8. Guess for me grunt/thrust power is far more important than the "cheaper" factor. If you want muscle car power, go for the 12, if you want just power...then the 9 will do. Also, a local dealership here in CT has a brand new 2005 12Scg advertised for $7900...there are more deals out there I'm sure.

i guess it is settling. but all im really looking for is something more than my 600cc shadow. because in the 60-100 range it is REALLY lacking. it sometimes takes me a second to pass average cars for goodness sakes. and i think 400 more cc will do more than that. but if i were to find a deal like that...yes i would take it in a heartbeat.

The 9 is not lacking. I drove a friends 600 Shadow. There is no comparison.

Shorter seat clips right in, just like a big Lego. Short inseam here too, 29 inches, pic of mine with the short seat on her. (clean for once)

Is that thing back on the road yet? Or still in the shop? Maybe it developed all those problems when you washed it. . .

I own both a 9S and 12S. They are suited for different tasks really. The 9 seems more capable in traffic, the 12 is better on the highway. Overall the 9 is my favorite though, I really like the power band and "feel" of the bike over the 12. If I had to let one go it'd be the 12. Don't get me wrong I still love the 12 but it seems more quirky then the 9. The 12 runs hotter, has pinging issues on 85+ degree days, and just isn't as smooth as the 9.

This is all conjecture, so my opinion is just that. What I'm saying is that you would be very happy with either of these beauties.

I own an '03 9S and an '04 12S (also.) From here, just re-read Luxor's post. I couldn't put it better. Well written.

Hello all,

I am going to buy a Buell soon. I am getting a re-enlistment bonus and figured I earned a new toy. I REALLY want a 2008 XB12Scg, however the XB9SX is cheaper. On the Buell sight, the 9 is about $2000 cheaper. Plus the 9 will save me roughly $700 a year for insurance. A bike would be a summer rider, commuting 40 miles round trip. I live in Wyoming, so a bike could sit for nine months out of the year. Thoughts or opinions?
