And before you start trotting out that tired old line about "124,000 miles", it proves nothing. You don't know if Teflon tape got into the oil. Nor do you know if it will next time you use it. It's like claiming that mountain climbing is safe because you met one old mountain climber.
124,000 miles is NOT a testament to how i ran my FXD?
ha ha ha ha
run your buell 124,000 miles and come and talk to me...
ha ha ha ha ha and do it in 8 years or less !

It's not proof, or even compelling evidence, that Teflon tape is a safe and effective substitute for drain plug O-rings.
Here's what they said in threads on hdforums.com regarding the use of Teflon tape on oil drain plugs:
On the plug o-ring, I think (check svc manual) you inspect it and if it shows any damage, replace it.. I'd have one handy if you need one, there ya go. I don't think I'd use any teflon on it.

Unless it is damaged, I replace the o-ring about every third oil change and don't use teflon on the plug threads.

Do not put teflon tape on the threads. The drain plug has straight threads (no taper) and teflon tape will not be of any benefit. It may actually be a detriment if it gets in the way of the o-ring and keeps it from sealing properly.

We're not paid to be engineers so let's not re-engineer the oil drain plug.

According to the Fix my Hog dvd you should not use teflon tape on the drain plugs anyway...always use Silicone Paste...the tape can get into the engine apparently. That's what the Fix My Hog guy said anyway.

Get yourself some Loctite thread sealant also.You will see that it is used on the drain plug bolts.Do not use teflon tape.

So, can I put a teaspoon of sugar into your oil tank? If you trust the filter to always remove everything (and to never have the bypass valve open up), you should be fine with me doing that.

From the Buell XB service manual:
Replacing Oil
1. Inspect drain plug o-ring for tears or damage. Replace if required. Wipe any foreign material from drain plug.
2. Apply Loctite 565 Thread Sealant, reinstall plug and tighten...
Looks like you're the one who needs to do some reading.

The helicoil is in. It was very simple to install and after one quick 50 mile ride, I've detected no leaks. |
