Hey guys, thought I'd share my new super-cheap catch can. $12 from Lowes in the air compressor aisle. I'm not crazy about the placement, and I'm not entirely sure it'll work, but for $12, I figured it was worth a try. Some guys from Yarisworld.com are using these as catch cans, and they seem to be doing well for them.

The angle I have mine mounted may not allow it to work properly, but the whole thing is kinda' heavy, and the fittings are long, so I couldn't think of a better place to put it. It's got a handy little nozzle at the bottom to drain it. The bowl isn't glass, it's a REALLY heavy duty plastic.

Forgive the pic quality... took these w/ my phone, which seems to require a steadier hand than I can offer.

Here's the tiny K&N-style filter I mounted to the outlet.

And just for fun, here's a pic of my recently painted chin spoiler. I used some of that plastic paint stuff in satin finish. No idea how it's going to hold up, but I think it looks better than that grey that matches NOTHING else on the bike.

Cool. I'm trying to figure out how I want to do my catch can set-up. There's an abundance of info here. I'm thinking I might get a mini Jaz catch can. You can pick one up for about $50...but I'm always open to cheaper, quality, alternatives. Where did you get your mini K&N? Did it easily attach to to the can? Was $12 your total cost...including the 3/8" lines and filter? How did you cover up the hole left in the bottom airbox cover? Thanks for any info.

Later, Jamie

Jaime,
The K&N-style (emphasis on STYLE, not actual K&N brand) was picked up for I think $5 at the local Advance Auto Parts. The hose was an additional $5-6 or so.

The inlet diameter of the filter was somewhat larger than the outlet of the can, so I used a small length of the 3/8" hose as an adapter, and slid the filter OVER the hose and clamped it down. Not too tight, mind you, or it would have closed off completely, just enough to keep it from coming off (rubber on rubber is pretty grippy, so no worries).

The holes in the airbox I plugged awhile back using two small sections of hose with two large wiring nuts wedged in the bottom side (I've had a different catch can rigged up previously). I actually want to route the catch can outlet back into the airbox like the factory intended, but I haven't figured out a way to pull it off yet... there aren't a lot of places wide enough to route all the extra hose!

If you're starting from scratch, you'll need a 3/8" vacuum line "T" as well, to link the two breather hoses together before feeding them into the can. They're dirt cheap... just a few dollars for a multi-pack of connectors. Overall, I think this entire setup costs in the neighborhood of $25-30.

Hope that helps!

You can make a catch-can out of almost anything. Here's my $5 solution...

The plastic can is actually a huge fuel filter I drilled a hole in the top of. I pulled out the paper fuel filter media with some needle-nosed pliers (it will get clogged with spooge) and shoved a plastic dish-scrubber in to act as an oil separator. I glued a little K&N breather to the top of it and installed a little drain on the bottom - it's a vacuum hose fitting with a rubber vacuum plug.

Here it is installed on my tuber. This could be hidden anywhere on an XB or left out in the open.

I've been working on a breather/catch-can and wanted to mention a product that I used: The Twofish Unlimited Lockblock.

As you can see, they can hold round things parallel or perpendicular to one another depending on the model chosen. They are incredibly strong and secure. I use one on my boat to hold my VHF handheld to the rail on the center console. I've been through rough rides with it there and never has it let me down.

I bought mine at West Marine (boating store), but the Twofish website (http://www.twofish.biz/) lists many vendors that carry them.

Hope that helps.
