Will a K & N High Flow Air Filter for an 04 and 05 XB12R fit an 07 XB12r?

Two questions; if the low hanging fruit in the after market power game is the K&N filter. Why doesn't Buell have them as the stock filter? Likewise, why does Buell have the complicated, heavy, interactive muffler when all the after market systems claim better results without it?

Well first of all,
You could NOT buy a K&N air filter unless through Buell for the first few years...

And the Stock Exhaust does Work... However yes EPA would be my guess...

K&N was the early XB race filter. Thats what I got in Mar. 04 when I ordered one.

The K&N is now available directly from the factory, the code is BU-9003 (long live the code...!)

BU-9003 matches the filter at Dennis Kirk. =)

There have been tests run which show that the filtering efficiency of the K&N filters is not as good as a high-quality paper filter. K&N, of course, has tests which show otherwise. And the tobacco industry has tests which show that cigarette smoking is not related to cancer...

Likewise, why does Buell have the complicated, heavy, interactive muffler when all the after market systems claim better results without it?

The Buell muffler is far quieter than the aftermarket systems. In the American Sportbike comparison of Buell exhausts, the peak reading from the stock XB12 muffler was 116db while the aftermarket XB12 mufflers were between 123db and 124db. That's a HUGE difference. A 6db increase is doubling the sound pressure level and we're talking 7-8db. That's somewhere around 2.2-2.5x the sound pressure level. Unlike the aftermarket, Buell has to provide a muffler which will meet EPA regulations.

To me, the best muffler made for the XB12 for street riding is the factory muffler. I ride the bike to work, get off and my ears are not ringing. I can ride late at night and not impose the sound of a loud bike on people who might prefer to not hear it. I don't wake my neighbors or their children. I've seen lots of guys on louder, higher horsepower, lower weight 600cc sport bikes that can't keep up with me on my Buell. That I can kick their butts with a quiet, stock exhaust is even more rewarding.

I'm an AMA member and fully support their position on loud pipes: "excessive motorcycle sound has become the single greatest threat to American motorcycling’s future."

I would think that uneducated, unendorsed motorcyclists not wearing proper safety equipment, far more threatening than loud pipes. But then I never was a member of the AMA
Ps not even going to touch riding impaired due to booze, rx or other drugs.

They are more of a threat to themselves, but not to our right to ride and modify our motorcycles. Harry Homeowner is not going to get himself all worked up if some unlicensed motorcyclist dies on the freeway.

What's going to get him calling his city, state, and federal representatives demanding that laws be passed are loud bikes that rattle his windows at 3AM, wake his kids, and and generally annoy him.

Laws have been passed in response to loud pipes all over the country. There are private communities which have banned motorcycles. Denver has passed a law which basically makes it illegal to ride a motorcycle with an aftermarket exhaust. Maine has an inspection law which states "6.1.6 Reject vehicle if the exhaust system is not comparable to the original equipment." For every one which is on the books, the AMA has probably lobbied to keep at least half a dozen others from being enacted.

But then I never was a member of the AMA

You should consider joining then. As motorcycle riders, we have them as our lobbyists. They are the ones fighting laws that would limit what we could ride, where we could ride, and what kind of gear we have to wear.

they get my support when they start confiscating cars and licenses from drivers that cause accidents with motorcyclists because they didnt "see" them. Until then, its 87 db out the pipe and 110 db out of the air horns (the next project)

While I don't want an obnoxiously loud pipe, I do like a little more rumble than stock. My stock 12R is too quiet. My 98 S1W with a Vance and Hines is just right...

If the AMA had their way, that's exactly what would happen. Right now, their hands are full fighting the politicians and judges who view motorcycles as public nuisances which should be outlawed.

Until then, its 87 db out the pipe and 110 db out of the air horns (the next project)

Amen!
