Just wondering how you guys are checking your oil.

I know the manual says when hot on side stand but is that practical, hot i mean.

I like to check mine the night before the ride, and so its cold. But I am making the assumption that if the oil level is right at the top of the 'Add' part when cold then it will be ok when hot.

Does that sound right, i am assuming the oil level goes up when hot???? and so if its at the bottom of OK when cold it would be perfect when hot???

Please advise

I find mine is just inconsistent when it's cold, so I take it for a short ride around the neighborhood - just enough to kick the fan on, then bring it home and check the oil.

If I see oil between around the middle of the add/full range I don't add anything because my bike seems to "like" the middle of the range. Anything over that gets puked out.

DO NOT CHECK COLD - this is a dry sump motor and the oil will have flowed out of the tank into the engine - away from the dip stick. You could be more than a half quart off.

It's not so much that it must be HOT but it must be at the proper level.

Just start the engine, give it a warm-up while you are gearing up and then check it before rolling out.

I always check mine when I return from a ride just before parking for the night.

thanks guys.

I knew i should be checking at hot, but i figured it must consistantly measure somewhere on the stick cold as well. Just a thought i was having.

Tell me would there be more oil in the tank when hot or cold, i thought cold as it is a dry sump???

ANyway good tip about checking after the ride, that way you check hot, and its good to go for the next ride

I check mine twice. Once before I head out after it has warmed up for a few minutes and once right after I get back and strip off the gear.

I'm a little anal.

How to know your proper oil level and where it is on YOUR stick.

-Ride bike 15 mins till hot.
-Drain all of the engine oil and replace filter.
-Add exactly 2.5 qts like the manual says.
-Ride bike 15mins until hot again.
-Recheck oil. Where it is on the stick is your proper oil level. Mentaly take note.

I made a seperate whits stick so it shows up easier to read.

If its Below add, above add, it doesnt matter you have just put in exactly what the system is designed for.

Trust me if you do this you will save yourself alot of worrying /hassle.

The tubers were very bad about puking if you checked and filled the oil with everything cold. You still run the chance of thinking the oil level is LOW when you check it cold for two reasons: 1: Oil can drain back to the crankcase. 2: Oil has not expanded due to heat.

As everyone else has said: "Check it at the end of the ride, or ride for 10-15 mins and check it."

No fun cleaning off that oil when it pukes. Been there done that, read the book and I am a believer!!!

watched a couple stunt phreaks playing extended straight up wheelies on a pair of XB's.... asked if they ever lost oil pressure. answer: we FILL THE SWINGARM UP ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.

I have BOTH tuber and XB - for the Tuber I got the Banke oil gizmo that bonds into the tank and gives a threaded oil filler. I still MUST pay attention to oil level but if filled above the bottom mark, it no longer blows out.

Different problem than the XB which already has a threaded filler gizzie.

And always check the oil after HD services the bike! They over filled mine, not once but twice!

How could they overfill it? You just pour until it runs out the filler or the bottle is empty, right?

hey Sgthigg thanks for the suggestion. I feel stupid for not thinking of it!! : )

I've always had real trouble finding the black oil line on the black stick. Just never thought about making a 'tool' dipstick that is readable and using the POS dipstick as just a cap.
there is always something to be learned on this site!!!
