I'm pretty sure that is going to be the wrong signal levels. That serial port adapter takes the TTL levels native to your Palm and bumps them up to RS232 levels. The circuit board in the VDSTS cable then takes the RS232 levels back down to TTL level. Since the VDSTS circuit board isn't there (and probably wouldn't work without VDSTS), you've got a level mismatch. If you're going to build your own cable and don't have a Deutsch crimper tool (I didn't) you'll need to solder the ends on. Get the smallest gauge Deutsch sockets you can - they'll still be too big. You'll probably need to use 20 gauge wire at the largest to be able to fit it to the connections on the bare palm connector - the pins are stacked in an alternating pattern, but they're still pretty tight. I think the USB cable I used for my wiring was 24 gauge and 28 gauge, so I basically filled the Deutsch sockets with solder to anchor the wires. FYI: I bought my Deutsch connectors from this guy - they were cheap, came with everything (even some extras I didn't need) and showed up in a couple days. |

Just ordered a Deutsch(finally spelled it right) from your e-bay guy. Make sure I got this right... This is just a straight through cable hooked up to the correct pins as stated above, with nothing else in there, right? I can totally do this! Thanks for all the input! Tank |

Well, technically, it's not straight since you do cross the transmit and receive lines. But yes, it is just some plain wires with a palm connector on one end and a Deutsch connector on the other. |

Cool, thanks Dgunther. I now have a use for my Sony SJ20 that's been sitting for 2 years Yes, the old Sony Clie SJ series does do TTL |

We like plain wires! Now to sharpen the tip on the soldering iron.... She may be a little hot, but if I run it through about 150' of extension cord, it should be just right!! (Message edited by Tank_Bueller on August 10, 2007) |
