I think I know the answer already but want to doublecheck... Does Buell use Surlyn for the body work on all models - or just the Blast? Is the translucent colors also Surlyn? Do other bike manufactures use Surlyn? Where do babies come from? |

1) Yes, though I don't know about the 1125R (yet). 2) I *THINK* it's a different material but don't quote me on that. 3) Nope, though car manufacturers do. 4) The stork leaves them in the cabbage patch at midnight under a full moon. EVERYBODY knows that!! |

The XBs in solid colors are surlyn Translucid plastics are not surlyn Not sure if they still do, but didn't Saturn use a similar body panel material? (Message edited by diablobrian on July 31, 2007) |

Not sure if they still do, but didn't Saturn use a similar body panel material? Yup. Saturn sure did. And I believe the 1125R uses Surlyn also. From what I've seen, alot of XB parts will work on the 1125R, and visa-versa. |

Really Dana? I thought that the translucids were a much different chemical composition than the solid colors. I didn't think you could dye the translucids and I know that the translucid panels are more prone to cracking/are at least a bit more brittle than the solid pieces. Well I stand corrected then. |

I'm with Diablobrian on this. I know I read that the solids are surlyn and the translucid are something else. I just can't remember what they called it. It's some where in the archives. Circa 2005. Edit: unless they changed it, translucid is somethibg else. It definitely is not surlyn on the 05 CityX. On second thought, it's probably in the late 04, early 05 archive. When the CityX first came out everyone was either asking lots of questions about it or complaining about how it looked (funny that). I remember a thread about the clear plastics. no surlyn in saturns; Materials used for the major body panels include Noryl GTX 910 PPO/nylon alloy form GE Plastic for fenders and quarter panels; Pulse B250 PC/ABS from Dow Chemical for door panels, rocker panels and lower deck-lid panels; HiFax ETA-3095 TPO from Himont Inc. for upper and lower front bumper fascia; and an unnamed proprietary HiFax TPO grade for rear bumper fascia. |

what is special about surlyn, and why is buell the only manufacturer to use it in bikes? |

I too recall reading that the tranparent body panels were made of a different(not surlyn) and more easily fractured material. |

I'll tell you where I got my answer from. When Erik's design people brought body sets over to The Sign Shop (My Painter) to do the custom paint jobs on the Uly's for the Queenryche bikes. They referred to them as surlyn multiple times through discussing how to apply clear coat to them. Buell has some problems with early 03-05 plastics cracking particularly around the fasteners on the airbox if over tightened. I think that has been fixed since then. Just going off what I remembered talking with them. |

OFF TOPIC: Dana, I totally blew it at the Cabones bar. I recogized you from your pics and I was making my way over to introduce myself when I got distracted by the two local girls that were hanging out there. I missed out on meeting a lot of Badwebers but what can I say, they were too cute to ignore |
