...was just curious if this would make any sort of an effective traveling machine or if you'd be looking for a gas station every 125 miles.

I think you should see close to 200 miles before you hit reserve.

I've been getting about 43mpg on my xb9r when really pushing it.

On my 05 (they closed up the snorkel port in 06 and made the 'tank' bigger) I am looking for gas at around 125 miles. The way I ride, I almost always get between 43 and 45 MPG (never lower, occasionally significantly higher).

That being said, for longer rides I now subscribe to the... who was it... Fireman Jim? JB2? Ferris? Rule of thumb... never ride by a gas station on a long trip with more then 100 miles on a tank of gas. Stop, get gas, pee, stretch out a little, give the bike a quick walk around, and get rolling again fairly quickly.

So the 125 miles per tank fuel range could become an issue under some rare circumstances (perhaps out west), but in 20,000 of riding my CityX (including a couple long trips) has been a total non issue.

On my XB9S, I've gotten 170 miles on a tank that was mostly highway. It needed 3.2 gallons to fill up, so about 53 mpg. BTW, I am 180lbs with gear.

After about 100 miles on the highway, I am looking to get off and stretch my legs, a fillup is a good break: )

140 for the light, every time just like clock work. my next exit is usually gas so I dont know what the real legs on the bike are, but that is about the time I need a stretch anyways

Yea I average a good 53mpg consistently. And usually my fuel light comes on between 150 and 160 miles. Which is just enough fuel to give me two days of commuting to and from work (70miles round trip) and a couple extra miles if I go somewhere for lunch. and on my ride home on the second day my fuel light will normally come on.

At about 135 miles I get the light so I figure 165 plus or minus to be safe.

I get 150 safely with the light on at about 125/130. This is most city riding and cruising at 80. I'd probably go dry at 175.

Right around 50 MPG with a combo of highway and mountain roads--and as always spirited riding. I see 42-43 MPG in the city. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see something like 55 MPG if run exclusively on the highway at reasonable speeds (80 or below).

I have an '06 XB9SX and I believe my max range is about 150 per tank--at least max comfortable range.

My light comes on @ 100-120 miles. I think xl1200r must be doing a lot of downhill riding, or his odometer is wrong.

Make sure you distinguish between an 05 and an 06... the 06 has significantly more fuel (as there is no snorkel in the frame).

I was pushing mine along the side of I-75 in downtown Dayton with 173 on the odo (05).

Guys, not bad math here. If I'm doing straight highway riding at reasonable speeds, I get about 65-66 mpg on my XB12, let alone an XB9 that we're talking about here. Both bikes claim 65 mpg highway, so I'm right in line there.

If we take that down to a safe estimate of 60 mpg, multiply it by the amount of gallons a short wheel-base XB has before reserve (3.07), you'll get 185 miles before you hit reserve.

When I'm jumping around town and being happy with the throttle, I get at least 150 miles before my light comes on.

Fuel light on at 110 to 130, pushing around 160. Don't ask how I know...

Mine is an '05 with the smaller tank. Fuel mileage runs from a low of 40 to a high of 55 or so.

I bought my 05 City X in Austin Texas and drove it 1200 miles home to florida..

260LBS gear and supplies..

I got about 130-135 miles per tank going 75ish

I took her to 142 one time and I was shitting my pants that I would run out..

I've heard of people using a cleaned out oil bottle with gas and stashing it on their bikes..

I haven't tried it but will in fall when I go to NC..

XL1200... I would not be surprised if the long stroke 12 motor got better fuel economy then the short stroke XB9 motor, especially when being driven gently.

i have learned this as well. my light comes on between 110 and 120. i also live in atlanta, where we have to run 90mph on the interstate to keep from being run over by semi trucks and Z71's with superswampers. : )
