O.K. for you guys that have installed the Stebel. I have been reading up on the thread and other places on the internet and have a couple of questions for you. 1. It looks to me that it can be wired in conjunction with the existing horn. Is this correct? Or do you take out the factory horn and simply replace it? 2. What is the factory db rating of the factory horns? Mine will be different since I have an old tuber but it only works when it wants to. If the tuber horns are louder than the XB's you guys could probably yell louder. I usually find myself using sign language as well as the horn. I had two old men eating ice cream yesterday try to merge in on top of me, luckily the horn wanted to work that time. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm thinking of ordering this horn next payday, space won't be an issue as I still have the breadboxes on the side of the X1 and also have space behind the windscreen. Thanks. |

I can answer number 1, above. Yes, you can wire the new horn with the existing one. The directions that come with the unit provide that information. I replaced the existing horn with the new one. However, I disconnected it from the compressor, reconnected using a hose and shaved the horn to fit - it's only plastic so it was easy. Captainxb helped me out and had some great pics... |

I installed a Blaster horn on my S. It has a somewhat cramped fit beneath the flyscreen after some horn bracket modification but is nice and loud. Actually FIAMMs freeway blaster horn seems quieter than an autozone blaster horn. I'm sure I've got pics around here somewhere. I also installed a relay to give 'er a little more juice. This type of horn is sensitive to the amount of airspace around the top and can't be touching ANYTHING. It has to 'float' in there. If anyone wants more info, ping me. |

As I mentioned earlier, my first installed Stebel Nautilus Compact air horn on the XB failed after 2 weeks, lost the Low tone portion. It was still loud, scared away a momma moose and 2 calves. I have installed a new horn which is working nicely, as is the one on wife's Ducati. I removed the compressor from the broken horn, and mounted the compressor under the hood of my Dodge pickup, ran a hose to a REALLY BIG BRASS MARINE FOG HORN, hooked it in with a relay to the oem horn button. Works pretty well. should be good for alerting stray dogs, tourists, children and, and distracted cell phone users that imminent harm is afoot. ( Just in case they missed the straight piped Cummins diesel thunder) |

Isn't it more of a meep meep? Reminds me of a story about a guy named Mark who was walking home from a Halloween party. He decided to cross through the local Cemetary on his way home at Midnight. When he got halfway through, it was getting dark because of the tree cover and he heard a soft "Mark." He was a little startled, he started walking faster, it was getting closer..."Mark" HE starts running. It's getting louder and closer. MAARKKK!! He screams, runs, then trips over a short grave marker. Cowering down, he turns around and sees a Hair-lipped dog. |

I just finished the install of the Stebel Nautilis on my 12R less than 30 minutes. I didn't want any of the hardware showing and there is no one place to mount it as a whole unit without showing. The compressor fits upright snugly between the two lights and behind the fairing. The horns fit snugly (with a small amount of the exit hole flange trimmed) where the OEM horn was. A flexible tube is routed through a 1/4" hole drilled through the middle of the lights' bracket to the compressor. I used a barbed brass fitting into the horns from the compressor. Outside of the horn, I had to buy some wire connectors, brass fitting, wire, fuse, fuse holder, and a bunch of zip ties. I have yet to really stand on the horn. I've just tapped it to test it in the garage and that was PLENTY LOUD!! Thanks to all who posted on this and other thread to make the install easy. Peace |

Ace, Thanks. I do have time to get a couple pix of it when I get home (tomorrow... I work out of town) but probably not enough time to tear it apart to take detailed pix with the fairing off (I take off to another worksite 4 hours after I get back). Incidentally, if you have a Dremel tool or the like, cutting away some of the bracket that holds the compressor to the horn needs to be trimmed as well as some of the plastic around the exit holes on the horn. |

Ace & Diablo, I couldn;t upload the pix on here. I can't get the size under 71kb. But you can go here http://homepage.mac.com/whtshprd/PhotoAlbum9.html In the pic where you see the hose run around under the left light, I ran it that way from the compressor because the outlet from the compressor faces directly down. If I went from the compressor straight through the quarter inch hole drilled in the bracket to the horn, the hose would kink and restrict the air flow. So, it runs down, under and over the left light, in through the hole and to the horn. Oh, I forgot to label it, but in the "underside" pic of the horn, you could see the barbed brass fitting (blurry) towards the front of the horn. I had to drill out the hold slightly to get the fitting to bite into the plastic. I also wrapped the threads with plumber's tape to give a better seal. I'll try to get pictures of the install with the bike apart soon. Peace PS Sorry, rookie at this pic upload and all (Message edited by ebuella_virus on July 31, 2007) |
