I have to say, my Buell XB12R has been one of the most enjoyable, fun bikes to ride in the mid 70s degrees temps. Above that, pinging, detination and hesitation. It is time to move on and I have been considering the KTM 990 Super Duke.
The Buell is going to the corner for a time out. Not giving up, Researching and doing some R&D on an efficient EFI system. MAF

I've had the same problem. I've never been able to determine a pattern to it's behavior. I suspect the new 08 bikes with the improved fuel injection are a vast improvement.

Heyfred you will love the superduke but probably will miss the very low torque of the Buell since the real power on the superduke come around 6k rpm

It's odd. Some people report pinging in hot conditions and some don't. I've had my XB12R going from stoplight to stoplight in 90 deg weather with no pinging (Burlington, VT has the worst timed stoplights I've ever seen anywhere in the world...period).

My S3T on the other hand hates slow speed hot weather riding.

After running super I've had no problems with pinging and it seems to actually run better hot. Still need to bring her in for the TPS reset...Hoping it will cure the surging and occasional hiccup, but I've been way crazy busy lately.

If I run Shell premium in my '07 XB9R I have no issues regardless of temp. If I run BP/Amoco premium she runs like crap.

Crazy.

That SuperDuke is a fine ride. A bit spendy though. I'd rather have a 1125R.

Well my xb9 always pinged when it is hot out and the bike is hot, like running in town. I started running Lucas Octane boost and all the pinging, running like crap is gone. However if you are going to run any Octane boost make sure it is sensor safe and has no lead products in it

It's all in the tuning. I run a high compression (11.43:1) motor with a full fairing and I have no pinging issues as long as
I run 93 octane fuel (or 91 in a pinch but it does ping a little then).

The reason is simple, Terry G. and the guys at Hal's Performance Advantage (Halspa.com) tuned my bike properly.

Most dealerships' techs do not have enough experience with the XB buells to know how to properly tune them.

If your bike is one of the ones that pings do yourself a favor and take your bike to one of the dealerships that does have
the experience and get your bike sorted out.

The real issue is the inexperienced dealerships will not deviate from the manual when it comes to static timing and retard
it just enough to stop the pinging.

I have the same problem. Not so much pinging but with backfires and skips. The hotter it gets the worse it is. Wondering if it's running rich. Seemed to get worse though after a TPS reset.

I'm really hoping that the new ECU in the '08s fixes the hesitation issue. My '07 12Ss had a very pronounced stumble when shifting between 1st and 2nd. I had a TPS reset done but that didn't make any difference.

Stumbling is a good description. It's like it misses a fire on one cylinder every once in awhile, especially on the highway or low RPM's. I do have the Race ECM and the Special Ops pipe.

For those of you having engine performance issues... There has to be something wrong with something, somewhere, somehow. I have gone thru my '99 S3, '03 XB9, and '04 XB12. They all have Race Muffler/Race ECM. The S3 or the 12 never ran quite right after break-in. I installed the Race Kit and then kept at it until it was sorted out. I have had to check other aspects of a tune-up like timing, exhaust/intake leaks, TPS resets, voltage checks, etc... I found bad sensors. Temp Sensors mostly, but others too. Sometimes the sensors are marginal. I went thru all of this with my '99 S3 also. It takes patience and perseverence to tune them in... At least in my case it did. I do the majority of the work myself... but when it's a tough one, I call my co-wrencher/secret weapon. He's all over Buells.

I'm not saying you definitely have a bad sensor, but my bikes used to run like you are describing. They run flawlessly now.

Yeah. Engine temp sensor was the first thing I replaced (which is a pain to do without dropping the engine). It's possible that I could use a new set of plug wires, plugs, etc. .....but I really think it's in the TPS and/or timing as it runs great when the air temp is cold.

IF someone told YOU that you have to Drop the engine to replace that Temp. sender then They better keep to their day time job, As I can`t see a Dealer even telling You that...

Well, not a full drop, but if I remember right, the service manual tells you to drop the front motor mount.

On the plug wire changeout. I experienced an issue with one of my fuel injected vehicles when I tried to put an improved type of plug wire on it. Apparently the computer lost its mind because the resistance differed from the factory ones. Not sure about the Buells but would pay to check before spending the time and money on different ones.
