I know this has been spoken about several times but after reading many many posts for some reason i still can't get it to come up. I'm practicing in a nice open parking lot with no cars and of coarse all gear. I have an 05 xb9r. Here's the short of what i've been trying.
second gear about 4000 rpm rolling off and quickly back on the throttle. bike seems to unload the front but not enough to come up. Also tried pulling and bouncing it up while trying this.
Second gear about 3500 rpm slipping the clutch to about 5000 rpm the front tire will come up but only maybe 6-8 inches. and then I'm right on the rev limiter. Also tried pulling and bouncing it up while trying this.
I get pretty much the same results using 1st gear but I also know that i'm a little nervous using first cause i dont' want the bike to loop on me. I know the more frustrated i get the better possiblility that it will happen so i figure i'll ask. On my mountain bike I can ride wheelies forever. and when a kid i could go crazy on my old 125. for some reason though I just cant seem to get it to work for me. I know some of you must be awesome at it and well... I'm oh so jealous

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0UUnNjPzX0&mode=re kind of self explanatory here...

If you are going to practice then go to a parking lot with NO cars and Nobody there.. Except for someone to call an ambulance Just Be Careful why waste smashing your ride etc. practice on something simple first etc if ya MUST...!

It has to be really hard if not impossible to get the 9 up in second gear (without clutching it) seeing as how it's difficult on the 12 for me. I don't have all that much weight to preload the front suspension with, though. I'm a beginner like you seem to be so I can't really ride wheelies yet either. I'm sure putting your left foot on the passenger peg would make it easier, but I'm too chicken to try that yet. But in the end you're probably going to have to clutch the wheelies up if you want them slow and controlled.

I got a 06 xb9sx and although I can't wheelie well it has nothing to do with the bike, its just me freeking out once the tire is in the air. I can get it about 2 feet up and it is still rising, before I chop the throttle. Once I get more comfortable I will should be able to stop choping the throttle.

I would say the only time you should care about RPM is the begining. I like to cruise second gear at about 4000 RPM, then no more looking at the tach. Sit back a bit in the seat and try to be light on your handle bars. I think the most important part is to relax and don't over think (my first attempt of the day is almost always really good)

then I just pull in the clutch roll on the throttle in one motion (vrrrrrrmmmm) then let the clutch slip out almost as fast as I can with out just a complete dump. If I would guess I am probably reving to 6000RPM. but honestly dont think its a steady 6000RPM its more like I just ripped the throttle and as its spinning up through the RPM, 6000RPM just happened to be when I release the clutch.

Honestly its just practice practice practice. I am only good for about 4 attempts then I get to nervous and flustered and I need to ride for a bit to relax.

well good luck and be safe

Use the clutch! Power wheelies are for squids. Seriously though you won't see any stunter in the parking lot doing power wheelies, and there is a reason for that. It is more difficult to control a power wheelie than a clutched up wheelie, and clutching is more predictable also. Start using the clutch at lower speeds and much lower rpms, and you'll start bringing the front end right up.

I have a 9.

I guess I'm a squid. I have to be at 4500 at a minimum to bounce it up.

Give the throttle a blip to lift the front
let it fall fast
yank it off the bottom

I have to do all that at 5000 in the mountains due to altitude.

Okay, I'll try to help here a bit. Some of the advice your getting is good and some isn't.

First off, you can get XB9 or XB12 to wheelie in second gear with no problem. Trust me, their is nothing wrong with your bike.

You can do this two ways, either by Clutching or Bouncing. Both of which are achieved with timing and patience. I do most of all my wheelies standing up, so I prefer to bounce the bike up plus this put less strain and wear on the clutch. This is also a lot smoother. If you want to ride some sit-down wheelies, just clutching it is best.

If you in a parking lot, just power the bike up in first. Why you would even need a clutch or to go in to second in small area is questionable at best. XB's stand straight up with a shot of gas while in first.

Bouncing in second- This is achieved standing on your pegs and pushing down very hard on the front of the bike. You use the rebound of the front forks to give you a bounce up. At the same time give it lots of gas and pull up. It will come up like a feather on a 9 or 12 XB

Clutching - This doesn't mean dump the clutch. It also is a timing thing. You feather the clutch at the same time giving it gas. With much practice and timing the front end will pop straight up.

3RD Gear Wheelies (not for the novice) - Just this year I'm now able to pull up 3rd gear wheelies on my XB12 on a regular basis. Although some folks claim to bounce it up in 3rd, I found this very difficult without the clutch. What I do is a combination of clutching and bouncing for 3rd gear wheelies. I pop them up at around 75mph with no problem now.

Few tips for newbies - you can play with your rebound settings on the front forks to help a bit. If your bike is low on gas it helps keep the front lighter to pull it up easier. A few clutch adjustments may help depending on how you have it set. Keep your oil a LITTLE full when you actually start riding them a long ways (don't want to starve your engine). If your new, don't practice on windy days or rodes with a crown or hills. After you get it down, none of these will ever matter again cause it will be so easy.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.....cover the back brake. If your just starting, start with first gear wheelies and practicing hitting the rear brake to bring the front down for a few weeks before going any further. These bikes need to get to the balance point quick because of very few RPM's. On the rice burners with 15K rpms you have a lot room to get balanced and level, on the Buell you don't. So having quick reaction time with the rear brake is a must FIRST OFF. I actually mastered this on a Honda 50cc, a few wrecks on that didn't hurt much other a few $9 broken shifters.

Oh yeah, don't do this stuff on busy rodes. Not just safety but lots of tickets will occur. I have a few nicely paved rodes with very little traffic. Always look behind you before pulling one up, could be a po-po their.

I've been riding wheelies for a long time and love the hell out it. Just today I out lasted my buddy on his Honda 959 and a wheelie just over 2 miles, kept it in second gear and speed at around 55-60. My arms where cramping or I would have went further.

Wheelies are fun and not just for punks or hooligan. I'm almost 40 and still love the hell out of it. Please, wear your gear and be safe though. Email if you have any questions. Glad to help because I too remember the days when I thought there was something wrong with my bike when I couldn't wheelie.

Opps, forgot one more important goodie. Don't forget about the Red Line and Rev. Limiter. As mention, these bikes have a very low Red line. When I switch from my Yamaha R1 to the Buell, I hit the Rev. Limiter a few times during a wheelie and it brought me down like a ton of bricks. So you need to keep an eye on this until you get good at balancing the bike, or else your front will come down real hard.

Not being rude but "You are going to have to use your clutch to keep it up" doesn't make sense. Rode over 150 wheelies this week alone and never touched the clutch, most well over a mile long????????

REMEMBER, I just trying help here, not argue.

Pretty good video, there good guys. Again, though a few things don't apply. I wouldn't clutch it in first unless your becoming a parking lot stunter. 99% of these guys do stunts in an area the size of a driveway. This won't be you unless you okay with trashing your bike and dropping it a ton. I'm assuming most folks here just wanted to ride some wheelies on the rode amd impress sound friends or better yet chicks, this is where bouncing the bike is much, much better. Also, as I mentioned above you do not have the RPM's as the ricers, so it's a lot different. I rode wheelies for years on my Jap bikes and when I went the XB it was almost like starting over. If you clutch the bike in first, you'll probably hit the redline in about 2 seconds. As the video stated, start with 1st gear power wheelies, but I'm added to practice bringing down with the rear break, then your ready to move on. Again, you can email with ????, I'l be glad to help. Peace

Different strokes for different folks I guess dude... I use the clutch pretty much every time I ride wheelies unless it is by accident. I don't really ride anything in first unless I'm in a parking lot because it is so slow! I really think it is the opposite as far as clutching and finding the rev limiter. When you are using the clutch you can pick the bike up at a much lower rpm than bouncing.... I usually pick the front end up between 2,000 and 3,000 rpms, so that leaves me a lot of room to work with.

I learned how to wheelie in the dirt. Believe me, it'll be a lot less expensive to get a cheap dual-sport to learn on than it will be to learn on a pristine streetbike. The skills you perfect on the dual-sport (or whatever) can be carried over to any bike after that. I had plenty of wheelies go bad, but every time one went over, I was able to dust myself off and ride home.

As far as clutching or using power to get the wheelie started, that's more of a function of where you're at than of proper technique. It's not good advice to tell someone just learning to clutch a wheelie up, in my opinion. When the front comes up fast, your reflexes may not be in tune with the reactions of the bike just yet.

Lots of good advice is being given, but XB12rdude sounds like he's really trying to help. If you really want to learn on the street, I'd listen to him.

"Kjkaplan" exactly and thanks. Can you see someone learning to ride a wheelie in First gear and clutching it.........I have and it wasn't pretty......and your "right on"the dirtbike suggestion. I learned brake control on a Honda 50cc, twelves, ape hangers and everything on that little bike. The most I got from that is a few scratchs.

"Olinxb12r" I've learned to bounce my up in second at the RPM's your talking. I like doing stand-up wheelies, so clutching from stand up is a bit awkward, but can be done non the less.

"Blackbelt" you need to get that dammed bike broke in first (ha-ha). We should hook up this weekend and we'll try a mini wheelie school if it's not windy......that is if I don't break my back moving your deck tomorrow (of which, I need directions):-)

Anyway a cpl weeks ago there was a craig jones stunt video posted and he gave pretty good tips on wheeling(after he stalled his "bone stock" with a HUGE torque rear sprocket bike)

I'd stop by and pick up a few pointers if I was closer. I don't practice wheelies anymore, I just whip 'em out when I have to, but it would be cool to hook up for a wheelie-fest.

XB12rdude... what's the deal with lowering the rear tire pressure? I see most of the stunters running lower pressure in the rear when they're putting on shows. Obviously it wouldn't be safe to do this on the highway, but for just messing around in a parking lot, it might help a lot. Do you ever do this... and how low is too low?
