According to an 11/24/2006 Motorrad article on the Buell XB12S: … on the misfiring. Frequent short-distance operation can lead to damaged spark plugs, which have contributed to these failures among other factors. Starting the engine and quickly stopping it again also contributes to these defects. As of model year 2007, to counter this phenomenon the ECU has a modified mapping, which can be installed on older bikes by licensed dealers. Does this apply to U.S. bikes? I just bought a 2006 Buell XB12Ss new and am wondering if I should be going back to the dealer to get the 2007 mapping. I've got the 2007 airbox on order from American Sportbike, but I don't know if the ECU mapping was adjusted for that in 2007. |

... and further what could one expect to pay for such a service? |

My guess is IF the dealer has got the computer and software to do it, it should cost less than the $200 OEM replacement. If they don't, maybe there is or should be an exchange program (You bring your old ECM, they ship it to the factory to be remapped and swap it with a new one so you can go right away). |

When I got my 2006 the salesman (owns a 2006) said to let it idle about 30 seconds once you start it. He said that helps. He also said about the short trips causing problems. I always try to go the long way! The gas station is a mile away, but it takes at least 30 miles of good twisty road to get there |

ECM map was updated for the '07 Ulysses. Don't know why it wouldn't be so for the Lightening... If there is an updated map. The servicing dealer will have to use the year code for an '07, in order to load the new map in your '06 ECM. |

Thanks everyone. I've confirmed that there was a new XB12 map in 2007 and that it has been loaded by dealers into some earlier bikes. Since it's to correct a known misfiring problem (rather than to improve performance) on a bike that is now a week old (bought a leftover 2006), I'm hoping that my dealer (Whitt's Harley Davidson/Buell in Manassas, VA) will flash the new map under warranty. |

Fred, where are you getting this information? I haven't heard anything about a reflash for the '07's. I have an '06 xb12r, but i also have the Race ECM and a Jardine. The short trip issue is because it will foul the plugs. Can anyone tell me where this "reflash" info is coming from? Thanks. |

Fred, where are you getting this information? Well, for one thing, the aforementioned Motorrad article on the Buell website: http://www.buell.com/en_us/news_events/pdf/112406+ Motorrad_article_en.pdf Others have also confirmed that there is a new map. I haven't heard anything about a reflash for the '07's. I have an '06 xb12r, but i also have the Race ECM and a Jardine. The short trip issue is because it will foul the plugs. Can anyone tell me where this "reflash" info is coming from? Thanks. I don't know if there is a new map available for the Race ECM. I have only heard about one for the stock ECM (or ECU depending on your preferred terminology). Apparently, the flash is specifically to address the plug fouling issue. |
