ok... i have no experience with this motor we keep talking about. i know that mazda's 13B rotary motor is a maintenance nightmare, and the 12A's....

anyway... is the rotax just a moto-rotary motor? and if so, WHY would we want to sacrifice torque as much as a rotary would force us to? aren't there better options?

(i know that use of this motor is only speculatory, but in the event.....)

just wondered what everybody thought about it and why.

and sorry if there are other threads about this already. it just crossed my mind.

Rotax is a manufacturer of engines.

This should point you in the right direction

I think it's a twin cylinder engine. Both fire at the same time. Is it the same engine on the bmw 800s bike? If so I demo'd one and was pretty impressed by it.

Search the company on the net. I was checking out their motors the other day.

Rotax builds a wide variety of engines.

Snowmobiles to supercrossers to literbikes.

Been doing it for a long time for a lot of different manufaturers.

There was a couple motorycles with rotary "Wankel" motors...

I think one was called Hercules or something..

Hercules... yes. And the RE5 Suzuki that came out in 1975. Also... Norton, and even some racing versions. By the way... I don't like the Rotax 60 degree V2. My experience with it left a bad impression. Besides, it doesn't belong in a Buell in any way.

Rotax is also know infamously for their small airplane and helicopter motors.

I have a rotary engine in my RX-8 and let me tell you it's smooth and has plenty of torque. No complaints at all. Where else can an average guy afford a car with a 9k redline?

Rotax is just the name of a company that manufactures engines. It doesn't mean their engines are rotaries!

They make, among other engines, a liquid-cooled v-twin that has always received good-to-great reviews.

Edit:

Oh yeah, I read that they were having trouble with reliability in some European races. It could be exciting to see one of their engines in a Buell, but be careful what you wish for.

BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), which "owns" Rotax, makes much more than SeaDoos. They also make snowmobiles, ATVs, and more.

Ever heard of Aprilia? Rotax used to make the engines for their superbikes.

Where else can an average guy afford a car with a 9k redline?

Honda S2000. Not a Rotary, but same redline (at least the earlier models).

The newer Aprilia's had Rotax V-twin motors and they were pretty reliable, very popular, and had good power.

thanx for all the info guys!

keep it comin', just wanted to give credit where it's due for the links and shared knowledge.

i love BadWeB. : )

thanx for clearing that up. i was misinformed.

but what's the power delivery like, then? torquey, like our 45 twins? 'high-endy' like the IL4's? somewhere in between?

curiousity killed the cat, but it sure does entertain me. : )

If I'm not mistaken, the new CanAm Spyder also features a Rotax V-twin (CanAm also being a subsidiary of Bombardier).

KTM made their bones with Rotax engines throughout the 90's. They were too small to build their own engines (sound familiar) for many years and built their stellar reputation with Rotax powerplants.

Mike Fisher was successful in Supercross on a Rotax powered KTM.

I think you'll see something very similar to the Aprila motor going into a Buell in 2008. You just might see some body styling on a Buell that looks a little like an Aprila as well!!

With Rotax getting the nod for the new dirt bike engine, and Aprillia building their own V-4 powerplant, the 990 series Rotax seemed like a good candidate, with some updating and a bore & stroke job.

OMG that is so cool! There's nothing to it - it's a frame and an engine. I bet that thing is insanely fun to ride! Do you know any more about it or could you point me towards some place that will give me more info?

Mikexlr,

Soon. I have not forgotten about your offer to do some dirt riding too. I get hitched next weekend and then its off to hawaii for 2 weeks. It should quiet down after that enough to plan some rides. I put on the 07 airbox recently and it sounds great when you get on it. Still have stock pipe and ecm, I have not done or needed to do the TPS reset but plan on getting the scan tool from american sportbike.

I have a ULY and a Tuono with the Rotax V-twin...The motor in the Tuono is just awesome...very reliable and much faster than I am. The fuel injection is perfect and the sound is addicting. Just Sweet.
