Sorry to hear about the problem. Probably a big old steel worker like yourself is just over tightening the straps. They don't need a lot of torque. You want to make sure that the muffler is really snug up against the muffler mounts before you tighten the straps. The best way to do that is to jack up the bike under the muffler jacking points. I think I would tighten the muffler straps first, and then tighten the muffler header clamp so that the header is not "forcing" the muffler down in any way. By the way, you can buy the straps for about five bucks from a marine supply store. I bought some from them for the rear. One of the brothers who is currently in Iraq wants to buy some too, so if you get the part number of the marine parts, please let me know. Here is the web site of Deep Blue Yacht supply. http://www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/series.aspx?id= 128 |

hey thanks bud, just seems strange that they keep breaking now,the first one has been on for almost 2 years since i put my drummer on,the last one i just barely snugged it up just trying to figure out why they would start breaking now? |

How about just the measurements both front and back. They list the sizes on the web page. Leo |

Are you tightening down the front clamp coming out of the header first? If the front clamp is tightened first, I'm wondering if the header clamp isn't putting the front strap in a bind. |

Perhaps the drummer expands and snaps the clamp? If you put it on loosely, warm the bike up and then tighten it up to specs it may not break. It will be a little loose when cold but may stop the snapping issues. |

Not a Drummer SS? Replace the Aluminum bushings in the front muffler mount along with the bolt. Tighten that bolt with a friend (VERY tight). It's important to get the muffler installed onto the header correctly. you don't want to tighten the clamp while the muffler isn't sitting where it'll be, and then tighten the muffler straps. It'll break front straps or header studs (the straps are a lot cheaper ). In any case... I think the manual explains exactly how to do it. Follow those steps and you should be OK. Remember... At least check the aluminum bushings. Make sure that when the bolt that holds the front muffler strap mounting bracket is tight, the mount doesn't move. Also make sure that when you put the new bushings in, they don't touch each other in the center. This will allow them to rattle back and forth no matter how much torque you put on the bolt. As I recall (check though) the manual states that you should "snug" the straps up and then torque the clamp. I generally do that but leaving some room to be able to wiggle the muffler back and forth. Once I've wiggled the muffler back and forth and settled the muffler/header slip joint I torque the clamp, then tighten the straps. From what I can tell... If the muffler is installed too deep on the header.... You'll break rear straps and destroy the aluminum bushings in the front mount. If the muffler is installed too shallow on the header you'll break front straps and/or header studs. |
