Both of mine look like the rear pipe. I would have thought the front cylinder to run cooler out in the air flow, isn't that why the rear cyl. has a fan?

I'm still learning about our *lump*, so I apologize for the endless questions (I like to learn). There are a lot of brains to pick here.

Ridrx,
Not sure why they are coated, probably for looks. I haven't felt any difference in temp. They do look better all shiny.

"I would think the bike wasn't running properly"

Bone stock, and running perfect.

Not to say this didnt have something to do with it though:

Or, maybe some of this:

Spiderman is totally on the right track. I was a welder/metal fabricator for 10 years. Stainless steel does turn hues of gold and blue from heat. When you brush the stainless, the colors go away until heated again. I polished my headers recently and they were shiny silver. Within minutes, they were shiny gold.

I don't think that is the question though. I think everyone is wondering why the newer versions have a strange look to them. They do look like they've been bead blasted, but I can't say for sure.

A magnet will stick to my 06 header. Doesn't this indicate iron or at least a lower grade of stainless? My header also has a scratch through the gold coating and appears to have rust in the scratch.

There are two types of stainless, magnetic and non magnetic.

Non magnetic has a larger concentration of Nickle.

Your "rust" may be rust, magnetic stainless has a higher concentration of steel and could cause rust spots, my old stainless header on my tuber had some blemishes which could be considered rust. But it could also be "gunk" that built up. If you want to check if it is rust run some white paper in the scratch, if the paper turns a orange color it is rust.

My 0412R when purchased new, rolled off the dealer floor with gold colored pipes. By the time I got home (6 hour ride) they were not gold anymore.

Hey Buellx1 next time you do a smokey burnout like that, do it in the dark and you will see just how hot the pipes get. You might be amazed that they glow hot. sweet pics by the way, I remember those from a while back.

quick little comparison from brochure shots. the '03 bike is from the stripped down photoshoot, prob wasn't run yet, or polished a little. '05 looks to have been run, this is what my pipes look like. the '06's have that 'pantyhose' appearance i mentioned. still curious whats up. : )

I wonder if the gold color in the 06's is a zinc plating of some sort. My turned a dark blue/ brown after 2500 miles. Looks good to me.

It's just finished differently... I have an '04 with '06 pipes on it. It's like they bead blasted it BEFORE THEY PUT IT IN AN OVEN TO GET THE COOL UNIFORM GOLD COLOR : ). The '04 pipe looks like they ran it through a sander of some sort before they bent it.

Since nobody(Court,Blake,Anony.) will post on this subject, I guess the 'world may never know'. I figured it was a simple enough question. I suppose the "knowers" are all busy speculating on the '08 in the rumors thread.

Perhaps we've stumbled onto some well kept secret, hence the silence? Nah...it is curious though that such a simple question is left unanswered(for me anyway) for so long. I shall continue in my quest for the "truth".

LOL I was wondering how long that would take...haha.

However...'the truth is out there'...after all wouldn't info on the XB be in the 'X-Files'? Man, that was bad.

Ockham's razor,
the simplest solution tends to be the best one.

IE

Heat turns the pipe "gold"

The surface finishes give the pipes the different look.

IE if you take automotive paint of the same color and spray it on one half and apply it with a roller on the other half the paint is going to look different.

Magnet does not stick to 2005 and older pipes, put does to 2006 and newer. Newer pipes not the same quality of stainless steel as older pipes so maybe thats why they seem to be coated. just a guess.
