Schuberth J1 Motorcycle Helmet

The Schuberth J1 motorcycle helmet offers the freedom of a open face helmet with the added safety of a chin bar protector.

Also another 3/4 helmet minus the chin bar:

Not for me, but at least most of your nugget is covered. I don't think a single chin bar is enough.

My theory is protect your whole head or don't protect it at all.

I know the plastic shields are designed to protect you, but let's say you have that shield flipped up when you eat pavement. Your brain might be intact, but you'll look like you got mauled by the pavement monster. Living life with a permanently disfigured face can't be easy and you'll have to get used to being lonely.

I'd want a bit more protecting my chin.
Especially the accidents i've been in.
Kinda looks like a pilots helmet.
I'd use that chin guard as a heave hoe handle and toss that sucker away and buy a full face that's less expensive and will protect you better.
But if you like the open face it's your mellon and not my place to say what you should wear.

I still like the Roof Boxer:

Sadly, it is made for people with very round heads and mine is oblong (front to back, not side to side! )

Just buy a full face helmet. I'll never understand why anyone would want to wear anything less.

By the way, there is a picture floating around on the internet somewhere of a guys face after having his chin dragged along the pavement for a while. He survived but it looked an industrial sized cheese grater had been used on his face. Not pretty.

It's a good compromise between a flip up and a full face. My concern with any of the "modular" helmets is that they are only as strong as the anchor points.

Full face chin bars are not indestructible, but they do tend to have fewer structural weak points than do modular helmets.

The literature describes the chin bar as "removable". This means that it is subject to the same structural weaknesses as other modular helmets.

The shield is also a weak point. It is not nearly as strong as the shell itself. Full face helmets are a compromise between the smallest opening possible to reduce the potential structural weaknesses of the visor and the largest possible opening providing maximum field of vision.

In this design, I could see the visor collapsing allowing the chin bar to take a direct hit from above snapping it off and shoving it into your chest and neck (along with large bloody chunks of your face).

This helmet is better than a 3/4 helmet and not as protective as a full face helmet. It's better than a "puddin' bowl" which is only marginally better than none at all.

I'm dumb as a rock and not that attractive. I can spare neither the brain cells nor the appearance points. I wear full face.

I have no real input on this but I got a pretty good giggle out of this.

I've gone face down HARD a couple times in the past 5 years. Both times I've scooped dirt outta my eyes, ears, nose and mouth and never found parts and pieces of the helmets (yep, destroyed both of them)

When I first started riding dirt, we'd bolt football chinguards onto our helmets - they'd often get torn loose. Soon the manufacturers came out with the full-faced helmets.

Dunno - it may be better than a 3/4 helmet - from a Styling standpoint but think I'm adding a vote for a full-face helmet.
