This may have been discussed somewhere already, but I'll bring it up again anyway.

Y'know that kickstand issue some of the earlier XBs have had? The one where the bolt backs out and the stand falls off, or breaks while you're not around? My '06 Ss was in the process of doing this, but I managed to catch it in time. I noticed the spring was catching funny on the stand and decided to check it out. Good thing! Just an FYI for anyone that thought it was a year-specific problem that had already been addressed (like I did!). Guess we're all susceptible to it.

Now where's my thread locker...?

The '07s have a pin with circlip instead of a bolt.

So that's one problem they've dealt with

Thanks for the heads up swordsman. I took mine apart and put locktight on it at the end of last year and it has stayed in place ever since, so no need to be concerned after you get it done.

hmmmmmmm.

great to see this thread up here tonight. Just tonight my stand started doing a little odd maneuver where its not springing out as far as it did before. Before I put weight on it I have to push it forward with my foot.

Can anyone give me some insight on how to best handle this?
Does this need to be handled at the dealer?

I'm going to do some searches as well to see what I come up with.

Was this problem on all models?

Nickcaro, with basic hand tools you should be able to change the kickstand pivot bolt.

The "threaded pin" on the end of mine sheared off, but I caught it before it dumped the bike. It was leaning over more than it used too.

The pivot bolt is around $7 from a dealer.

My bike: '04 Lightning.

I'm somewhat sure there was a recall on my 06 Uly for this.

well, I inspected the nuts holding the stand this morning before leaving and all seems well.. no missing nut or bolt and its on tight. I rode in to work and maybe I have a different issue with my stand. the lean angle has not changed, it seems like something has affected the spring....

am I crazy?

my 03 lightning, 04 lightning, 05 firebolt, and my current 06 cityx, all had this problem, the cure is the new 07 style kickstand with steel pin and circlip, it fixes this, no more bolt to back out and shear off. i got tired of checking the pivot bolt every ride to see if it was still tight.

I haven't seen this new '07 setup... is it something that we could retrofit onto the older models? If so, I'll probably go ahead and do that, just to be on the safe side.

Nick, I think mine was doing the same thing you're describing. The bolt had backed out a little ways, and as a result one of the little flanges on the stand was catching in an odd spot on the spring, stopping it prematurely. That's what got my attention. definitely see if you can tighten it up.

i done the 07 set up on my 0512r and now my 06cityx, it just comes with the new kickstand, steel pin and circlip, around $48 total, you have to have the new kickstand because the hole that the pin goes through is bigger, the pin itself is like one size from top to bottom(pretty thick), all the rest you just reuse your facotory hardware, like the spring and the actual mount plate, kinda pricey, but for piece of mind its not to me. i got it through andy, he took dave s. place.

i dont have pics, but the old setup is a pivot bolt that screws into the kickstand itself(if it comes loose the bolt backs out a little and sometimes snaps off). the new 07 style is a solid steel pin that slides all the way through and is held in place with a circlip, no worries of it backing out. hope this helps, maybe someone will post a pic.

great pictures, now I have a much better understanding of the issue. I did bring out a wrench and try to tighten up that bolt. It did not seem like I was actually doing anything but when I was done, it returned to its normal action.
I will look in to having the 07' version installed soon.

Those pics are great
I have the old style.
Will they replace that for free pro-actively?

It happened to mine. I was able to catch it in time before it fell. I'm upset that thy did not send a recall out for this. Still waiting on the new kickstand. By the way you must leave your bike at the shop in order for them to order the part no matter how long that takes.

Recall...lol...Buell does not do recalls anymore. All they do is change it the next year and force you to pay for it if you want to fix it yourself...this is Buells 4th attempted at a kick stand on the XB model..Funny how the first fix in 2003 worked than they changed the design again and now you have the broken bolts sheering off...Why Buell no recall??

By the way, now there is a recall on the Uly bank angle sensor. Got it in the mail a while back and it's already done too.

In fact I got a reminder letter from BMC a few weeks after the work was done urgeing me to get it done! I called my dealer and they said they would refile my paperwork to get it on record.

Absolutely!
I even heard that they'll buy you ice cream with your choice of sprinkles or syrup for the inconvenience.

Free-yes!!!
Pro-actively-yes, IF they have your snail mail address at the time they mail out the recall paperwork.

If you are not the original buyer or your address changed you won't get the paperwork and you have to have your dealer run your vin number for a recall.
If by pro-actively do you mean will the recall work be done without any action by you, that is very unlikely. It does happen if the dealer you use scans the vins of bikes comming in for service and then has a recall kit in stock. Very rare but it happens.

In my case I made arrangements at my dealer and the service writer said he'd set aside a kit and appointment date for me. Made the 100 mile one way ride and no appointment and they were out of kits so I had to make another trip a few weeks later.

What if you drilled out the old stand and retro fitted the new pin with E-clip? Steve or Bud, does it look possible?

They must really like those Uly owners. I haven't gotten anything about a recall all I ever got was a survey from Buell.. Send me that survey again you'll have different scores.....
