Out of curiosity, why are you running 5w40? 15w50 or 20w50 will provide superior protection, especially in AZ temps. |

Sounds like he is running a synthetic diesel oil. Most are 5W40 though some are still 15w40. The diesel manufacturers who require synthetic usually require 5w40 which is why most synthetic diesel is 5w40. HTH, B |

hmm... that Copper reading is just about double of both the samples I sent out for my 12S. all other wear metals seem about the same. first sample for my bike was with Syn3 with almost 4,000 miles, second sample was 5,000 miles with Redline 20W50. some one else on this board had a 12X running 15W40 dyno rotella and also had about the same wear as with my samples. was this your first oil change? I changed mine out at 500 than at 5,000 and 10,000 |

Mesa, You might explain to these guys that the XB's have a silver-plated cage on the big end roller bearing in the connecting rods. I've seen two or three UOA's where they were puzzled by the presence of silver in the oil. |

Hugh, I've seen that elsewhere, too. Tpoppa, In my experiance, a thicker oil is no garantee of better protection. I have found a lighter weight high quality oil does a better job of cooling and lubracating bearings. Truckers use these grades of oil all the time. I ran this oil in my BMW for years, no prob. Sorry, I dont want this to sound like a rant. Elf, I'm running Mobil Delvac 1 for this uoa. |

That wasn't a rant Mesa, it was a reasonable statement based on facts and experience. Just FYI, I had problems with oil consumption on my 05 9sx running Castrol 5w50 full syn, and it went away when I put in Castrol 20w50 full syn. Aside from the consumption problem, it worked great. I expect consumption varies from bike to bike, so this may not be an issue for everyone. |

How much does it cost to get a test like this done? |

Blackstone Labs charges $22.50, and they offer a free test kit to send your sample in. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ |

Reepicheep, I wonder if the new oil pump used on the 06-up bikes with increased scavenging capacity is resulting in decreased oil consumption. Keeping the crankcase "dryer" means there's less oil to get whipped up against the back side of the rings where it can make its way to the combustion chambers and out the exhaust. I've got ~3000 miles on my 07 Uly (running HD 20W-50 conventional up to this point) and I'm seeing negligible oil consumption so far. (Message edited by hughlysses on June 04, 2007) |

those CU and AG values are noteworthy. those are main bearing metals. best keep an eye on that. |

Fullpower, These engines have roller bearings in the bottom end so I wouldn't think you'd be getting those materials from the crank or rod bearings. The cam end bearings are conventional and the oil pump drive gear is bronze so those could be the sources. |

Wow. I didn't know you could get these reports for so cheap. I guess they're cool, but how good are they unless there is a baseline test somewhere? |

07xb12scg, Your first test results are your baseline. I just ordered a kit myself, didn't realize they were that inexpensive. I got 6500 miles on my 0612R so I guess now is as good a time as any to start keeping tabs on things down there in the dark. It would be cool to have somewhere for all who have this done to post results. Maybe see a bigger picture than individual tests alone? Could shed some light on the ongoing oil debates as far as what brands/weights show least increase in trace metals and breakdown of base stock/and additive package. |
