The low beam on my XB12R burned out today. I need to replace it and would like to get something brighter. I will replace the high beam bulb if the price is not too much. I am not looking to install any kits. Just looking for ideas on what will work with the stock set up. | ||

Sylvania silverstars 20$ a pop at wally world. 100times better but eventually your reflective material INSIDE the lamp housing will deteriorate and you WILL have to replace the housings or new bulbs wont help much at all. I've replaced both mine with highbeam assemblies n silverstars. So far so good. | ||

Was in advanced auto yesterday and noticed they had the stock replacements for $4. I payed $15 each @ my stealership. | ||

Be careful using higher wattage bulbs. It has been suggested that it may accelerate the deterioration of the reflective coating due to higher temps those bulbs run at. Of course YMMV | ||

Hey,what's with the price variation Barker? I paid $7.50 each for two at $15. Is Barker's dealer price gouging? We should set them up by spreading out around the country and measure the variance. My new STOCK low beam i replaced last week is just "peachy". | ||

silverstars should be stock 55W. Upgrade to HID, I say. Only 35W, so I (knock on wood) don't have to worry about deteriorating reflectors. YMMV Sam | ||

14 and some odd cents each @ my stealership. I was going to get 2 but I could only afford one at the time. And I had to order it. Not in stock! My "local dealer" Is one of the "good ones" Some say one of the best. Lots of bikes, up front. Clothes, gear, and used bikes They even have dealer built custom buells (XB12RS). Owner is a great guy, rode with him a few times. He rides his buells @ track days. Service manager rides a XB9S. It's sad they appear to be a great dealer, I have just had bad dealings with some of there staff. Lets just say I try to stay away from them as much as possible. Other buellers love em. I wont mention any names, but you can figure it out form my location. I dont want to bash a dealer that looks like they are trying, but I preach the truth. | ||

Just went out to my barn. To look for light bulb package, yes I keep everything. Found the package the light came in. Its a kuryakyn bulb. WTF? Works fine in bolt. Hope it was the right wattage. No mention of wattage on package. Is the stock kuryakyn or did I screwed on that too? | ||

im 98% sure my silverstars were 65watts! i will have to go to advanted auto to see the box because i threw mine away. | ||

Its that 2% that gets ya. I've been running silverstars for years. There 55w. I'm not sure of the part number but I wanna say it was about 65-70$. If you are gonna do it I'd recommend you do BOTH cuz the newer assemblies have some weird texture right in the center of the glass. Looks kinda retarded with only 1 like that. | ||

Thanks for the info Troll. Do you have to do any mods to the high beam assembly to fit into the low beam's part of the support/bracket? I know that the adjustment screws are in opposite sides of the assemblies. Is it just a matter of rotating it ninety degrees? Thanks again | ||

I'm not sure if they are left / right side specific or not. I know I didn't have to do any modding to it. Just bolted it in. Someone with a parts manual can mabye help or call a dealer and ask about ordering one n they could probably tell you. | ||

Same bulb both sides. Low beam structure has a reflector. Remove reflector and you got your self a hi-beam. | ||

Barker is right. The assemblies are the same except for one piece on the inside. Just open up the assembly and remove the metal 'T.' It's held in place with a screw. That will save you the $$ and it's really easy. I don't think the 2005 lens has that texture troll was talking about. | ||

Cereal, yeah, my '05 has that weird 3/4" textured circle in the middle of the lens. I'll try the thingectomy on the low beam. BTW What's that textured stuff do on the high beam? | ||

Anyone using the Xenon/Halogens American Sportbike sells? The little shield in the low beam is for the cutoff line(so you don't blind oncoming traffic), I just followed the original contour and removed about 3/16-1/4 inch. Moved the cutoff further out by about 20-30ft, really helped a good bit. (Message edited by RidrX on May 15, 2007) | ||

Molly, I'm thinking you should carry some hot dogs or marshmallows if you use the 100w bulbs...lol. The factory 55w gets hot enough to cook the reflective surface off of the housing. Actually the jury(BMC)is still out on the cause,but until they say otherwise, I think that's the assumption by most. Try trimming down the spoon in the low beam, or you could just remove it. | ||

Funny how,they're BOTH 55w.Yet,ONLY the low beam housing(with the spoon) fries. With 100w bulbs the housing will catch fire for sure!! | ||

Ducxl, I think it's because the low beam is on all the time...though I have been wrong before. IIRC someone on here had removed the spoon from a nearly new bike and the reflector still degraded. If anyone has BOTH lights burning all the time(Firebolt's only)...how about checking the high beam reflector and see if it has fared any better. I'd still like to hear from anyone using the Xenon/Halogens...I'm not interested in spending a couple hundred for some conversion so I can have adequate lights on a NEW BIKE | ||

I switched over to the PIAA Xtreme White bulbs when the bike was new and the stock bulbs were tan. Literally like night and day. They are pricey, but I've always been happy with PIAA products. I had the Silverstars in my KLR and also in my Suburban currently. They are brighter than stock, but seem to be a little too blue/green. The PIAA bulbs are bright white and light the road extremely well. |
