So I discovered an oil leak on the swingarm. Upon further investigation I noticed a small pool of oil behind the rear cylinder on the transmission. I assume that drops were being shot through the cooling fan to the swingarm.

Anyway, I took it to the dealer to drop it off today. The bike is in the last month of warranty. The service guy informs me that I have to pay $80 (shop rate?) plus $35 diagnostic fee for them to look at the bike. I could be wrong, but I left with the understanding that I would pay that rate whether it was warranty work or not. If they find that the problem is not my fault, the repairs NOT diagnosis, are covered under warranty.

This kind of chaffs me the wrong way since I don't feel I should have to pay for a defect covered under warranty, even investigation time.

Is this standard for Buell or Harley?

Thanks for your thoughts.

If it helps my servicing dealer is Paradise HD in Portland, OR.

Wow Saintly, it looks like I should count my blessings.

I'm happy with my bike and have had a good experience with the quality so far.

I just want to make sure that my expectations are in-line with what is provided 'under warranty'.

Rayd8,

I would make sure I at least get dinner, movie, a kiss and a reach around on that deal.

No upfront cost while under warranty, diagnostic or not.

Find another dealer.

Thanks FB. That did seem a little steep for a first date, er first warranty service!

I sincerely hope that I misunderstood the service person and/or he had the policy confused.

I'll let everyone know what happens.

Let me chime in here since I'm from the area. Paradise HD has a GREAT reputation for taking care of us Buellers. Many that work there also ride Buell. There has to be a simple misunderstanding of miscommunication. if it is warranty, you should be handing no one any moola. Talk to Rocky down there or ask for a service manager.

Nope, Nope, Nope. Do not pay these guys a diagnostic fee for warranty work. That's a load...

I agree, it sounds like a mistake.

Good Buell shops rarely pull the "bad cop" routine.

Bad Buell shops virtually never pull the "good cop" routine.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks for everyone's input. I do agree that this is probably a misunderstanding.

I've never taken my bike in for warranty service, just wanted to make sure there weren't any fees, since I've never had that for any other vehicle that required warranty work.

I'll keep you posted.

"Find another dealer."

Sometimes, that's your only recourse. I couldn't get any problems with my bike resolved by the dealer I bought my bike from, but still got suckered into spending a couple hundred dollars on "services" that didn't fix anything. I finally went to another dealer and they fixed everything and didn't charge me a dime.

I got that load of crap from my dealer, but when I pressed them on it I discovered that the diagnosis fee and ship labor would be covered under warranty if the failure was not my fault.

It was not my fault so the entire repair was covered.

Last week I had mine in for service. It kept blowing the main fuse and I couldn't figure it out myself. My dealer is about an hour away and I had no way to get the bike there. They charged me a $200 pick up fee. The diagnostics and service was covered under the warranty and that was cool, but $200 to come pick up a bike under warranty. I thought that was some BS. Sounds to me they just off set the costs for service by charging me pick up costs. I didn't argue since I was just happy to get the bike back in working order.

Doesn't H.O.G. and the former B.R.A.G. cover towing the bike for warranty type issues? It seems like mine did once, when my clutch cable broke.

Yes they gave me a form to fill out and send in to H.O.G. and said I may get half of it back ($100.00) at most.

Just wanted to follow up.

It was a misunderstanding/miscommunication. Everything was covered under the warranty.

The stator & gasket were ordered and replaced in about 3 weeks (picked the bike up today).

I don't know how long a repair like this could or should take, but I'm really happy to have the bike back.

Regards,

-Mike
