Brand new XB12R with 110 miles on it and I had to take it back to the shop due to the fact that it will not stay running when I come to a stop in traffic and have to sit for more than a few seconds......anyone else run into this....keep in mind the bike runs like an animal when riding..it just wont idle for too long before it decides to die.... |

Well, my best guess, with the limited information provided, is that a HARLEY mechanic has incorrectly set your BUELL motorcycle's idle speed too low. Try adjusting the IDLE speed, at around 1050 RPM with engine at full operating temperature. |

sounds like it needs a tps reset. If that's all it is it'll take about 5 minutes to fix with a "scanylizer". |

TPS reset and bike is back in hands..it did cough up a lung through the airbox once though on the way back from the local shop..... |

i dont know....the local shop has a dyno so i imagine if that is needed then they probably ran it on the dyno.......I did get the bike back and it ran great till later in the afternoon........then its started stumbling again.......I did go and fill it up with fuel and havent had any problems with it yet.......Im curious though...shouldnt the low fuel light be coming on WAY before its starts stumbling and dying on me? |

According to Dan Bilansky(Hals top Buell mechanic), you should actually have close to 1150-1200 RPM for idle. This will reduce the "cough up a lung". As well. |

Also...would it be normal that the bike is only getting maybe 30 miles to the gallon in town seeing as how it is brand new and things just take more energy to run when the are new........am I way off base here or what...... i mean they are rated for 48-65 mpg......why would i be out of gas at about 100 miles if that is the case? |

100 miles isn't out of the question. Mine did that the 1st couple of tanks on my STT. And now with about 1500 miles on it, I get around 43-45 MPG in the city, and 48-55 on the HWY. Just make sure you let the bike warm up good before riding it. And give 'er a bit the 1st couple of gears after warming up. This will help keep the tops of the pistons clean of carbon deposits. Danny and I had a long discussion about TPS resets, idle settings, and other stuff this weekend. And what I've posted here, is what I've been told by him. And that man eats sleeps, and well.. everything else Buell. |

A question about open loop vs closed loop. If you have a brand new bike (under 1000 miles) is it safe to run it at a constant RPM. The break in rules suggests you dont right? |

Thanks guys for the infor...i will keep posting as i find out more but hopefully its just a matter of gas mileage for the time being and a not so accurate low fuel light. I will be taking the bike out this afternoon to try and see if the problem comes back after I have topped the tank of with new gas. |

personally i try to avoid the constant RPM's which isnt too hard unless you are out on the free way but i still just hit center lane and vary my speed, gears, and everything else I can do to switch it up..... |

I've never heard of any shop running the bike for the "learn mode" time on the dyno. Be sure to do it yourself to set the afv properly. |
