Okay, so when i first got the bike (2007 XB12R) I couldn't believe how cold-blooded the thing was. TONS of hesitation leaving from redlights when cold, and it would occsionally putter out and die at idle, hot or cold. I chaulked this up to the idle, which I thought was a touch low at about 850rpm or so. I put 60 miles on the bike before I installed a Spec OPS muffler. Bike sounded much better, but still ran the same (I wasn't expecting any different). 300 miles go by with basically no issue, aside from the cold hesitiation, et al as outlined above. The other day, out of no where, the idle climbed up to 1000 rpm and stayed there for a few miles. Then it climbed up to 1200rpm and stayed there for a few more miles. Then it climbed to 1500rpm and stayed there for the rest of the ride (about 12 miles or so). I put it away with the intentions of adjusting the idle the next day. The next day cames, and the things starts HARD. Cold idle was back down to around 750-800rpm, and it was running like shit. Hard to get it to rev unless you really gassed it. It also sounded like it was only hitting on one cylinder unless you revved it some, and you could hear this "air" sound from the under the airbox that pulsed with the engine (not a constant intake-like sound, but more "psh psh psh psh psh"). When i took it out for a bit, it still ran and idled like hell, and there was a lot of jerking and surging when at constant RPMs. All of this points to a lean condition to me. Anyone agree with this? I also don't know what would have caused it. I refuse to believe the pipe would have done so, especially after running fine for 300 miles. Does this sound typical of an intake seal failure? |

Sounds like fouled plugs. Start there. |

yep....its just the way they are while your breaking them in.. i fouled 2 sets of plugs before 600 miles.. change the plugs...dont rev it up while idleing untill it gets warm. Also letting it idle for TOO long will foul the plugs! |

Fouled plugs are generally a result of running rich, are they not? I thought these bikes were a hair lean from the factory, and the addition of the new muffler should have made it even leaner. And you're telling me the bike would go to shit from fouled plugs in a day? |

The bike under warranty? If so, get the dealer to fix it. |

The bike is under warranty still, unless the dealer gives me a hard time about the muffler. But again, new muffler = lean, which should have helped to keep them from fouling. |

Unless the o2 sensor detects that you're lean an alters the AFV when you ride at a steady speed (3000 rpm for a minute or two) and then the next time you let it idle, your computer is overcompensating and its actually too rich and you foul the plugs?? IIRC - The computer runs off the map and the prior AFV when its cold and warming up, and it doesn't look at the O2 reading until the bike is hot. But I might not know what I'm talking about. |

If your idle is that FUBAR have the TPS reset and idle set to correct value. That low of an idle would put the TPS voltage in or around 4 and change, which will screw up everything. TPS voltage should be 5.5 or a tad higher which will give an idle of around 1050 to 1150. |

Start with a TPS reset. |

Ditto the TPS reset, and perhaps a pair of new spark plugs and wires may be a real good start, also note the last step of a proper TPS reset is to adjust the HOT idle speed to 1050 RPM. If that doesnt make everything happy, then the next thing to check are the intake seals. |

Thanks guys... I had thought about a TPS calibration as well, just didn't think it would go that out of whack so soon and so quickly, but I guess I might have been wrong. I got the thing to the dealer since it is under warranty. Let them deal with it. |

Just a followup for anyone who might have the same symptoms. My intial suspicions were correct and the intake seals were "all torn to hell" as the tech put it. I had to have these replaced on my Sportster when it was fairly new as well, so I'm not all that suprised. Thanks to everyone for the pointers on things to check regardless. |

Mark - How many miles do you have on the bike? Keith |
