My hubby's bike is down. It had a chirping noise in it from the start. Was taken to the dealer at 150 mi due to engine light going on and this was mentioned. Said they couldn't hear anything. Took it in again at 1000 mi check and still had the noise and was told there was nothing wrong. Chirping was getting louder and performance was getting worse.

Well, it's now at a different shop being looked at. They did a cylinder leak down test and showed that the rear piston and rings were out of speck (too loose). Just got a call from the dealer and they told us that Buell is only willing to put in a new piston and rings in the rear cylinder and rebuild the crank shaft.

Bike is a 2006 XB12R, still under warranty.
It's already been in the shop for 2 weeks and was told won't be able to get the parts for another 2 weeks.

You don't have much of a choice do you. Relatively new bike and under warranty, so you have to let HD&B take care of it I would think. Too bad tho.. Now that riding season is starting to really kick in. I hope they do you right.

I called the dealer to let them know what happened and they were great.

The plan is, they're going to work out a deal where they'll take the bike back as a trade-in and we're going to pick up a TT tomorrow. (a small hit financially but it's worth it)

When the dealer who has the bike now is done working on it, they will ship it to the other dealer.

So, that means that we'll have a lot of stuff from the XB12R for sale (Select seat brand new, etc). Will post what we have on the classified when we get a list together.

That happened to me too!! I took my bike to the dealer 4 times before they did something... they changed the internals of my engine 2 or 3 times, and the problem appeared again every time, now they replaced my entire engine.
The way I did to make the noise happen was after riding the bike normally for about half an hour, was to stop it and let it idle for about 5 minutes... the CLACK CLACK noise just get louder and louder, until you think its gonna blow...

Well, it doesn't matter now what happens to the BOLT. It has been traded in for a TT. When it's done getting fixed, the dealer will pick up the bike (it's at a different dealer getting fixed) and it's their's to play with.

Get to finally ride again and heading to Miller Motorsports in Utah in 2 wks for the riding2savelives benefit.

Will be calling Buell customer service on Monday to let them know a bike got out of the factory unsatisfactorily. Should never have gotten to the dealers. Bad from the start.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Actually no, not yet, they are analysing the old engine, they said something about, Cylinder ovalization, then lack of oil to the upper parts of the engine, to the electric starter engaging... so i guess they have NO clue about it...

Sounds like non of them have a clue (dose any of them know how an engine works or are they just tinkering with something they are not trained on?).
Also sounds like you have better customer service from Buell (or Harley) over in the US. We get treated bad over in Europe. Maybe there are a lot of bikes that should never leave the factory. My XB12R 05 has only 40,000 km on the clock and has been in the dealer a few times already. This time the engine is totally screwed. I am rebuilding it myself this time so we will see how it holds out after that. Interesting experiment so see how that turns out.
The noise? - Big end bearings???? that makes more of a DING DING sound though. Clack sound more like lifters faulty or another part of the valve train. Cams make a nice sound if they can move too much from side to side too (I suppose that is still part of the valve train though right). Could be a load of stuff but there is only so many possibility - come on "mechanics".
Let us know if some "genius" actually finds the fault, if they just talk poo or if they don't bother looking any further.
Good luck with the new bike.
......Fulgur.

Willing to take as a trade in? Financial hit? They should have given you a straight trade since they sold you a lemon. Should have let Buell know directly. They would have purchased the bike for total paid price!! The dealer just made more money from you after selling you a piece of crap! Terrible deal IMO!

Did call Buell customer service on Monday morning just to let them know what happened. Had already called them a month or so ago to advise them of the problem.

Yeah, I agree, should have been an even trade across the board, but I'd rather have a new bike than deal with the lemon.

In the end, we'll only be out about $500 or less. It's a lot nicer now seeing a smile on my hubby's face instead of a frown.

Hopefully everybody involved (including us) has learned a lesson from this.

Cacciola says:

Idle for 5 minutes at perhaps less than recommended idle setting (1050rpm) may starve an engine of oil and when the heads don't get enough oil all types of strange sounds may occur.

Hmm, I would ponder to say, the primary chain was not adjusted properly, warms up and gets even looser. All of the Buells I have owned :
Plus a few more, have all had the primary chains too loose and one even have a chain adjuster failed. All that oval cylinder moo-joo is crap. Weak rings, yeah, not broken in yet...maybe. Sounds like they(the dealer) had no clue, but, wanted to tell you something. I always ask people in those situations..."well, do all of the rest of them make that noise, run that way...let me ride another one while you ride mine, we will see if 'they all make that noise' that usually puts them into a more workable stance."
I am sorry on behalf of Buell and your dealer, that you had this poor experience.
