Hi all, I finally put my money down on a 2005 XB12R to compliment my ,Aprilia RS250, on Sunday and I should be picking her up in the next week. I have been after a Buell for years an have been lurking on this forum for the past few months, reading the archives until way too late in the night, getting as much info as I can, thanks all, for the help. In that time, Ive been to 3 different dealers for test rides (9 vs. 12 comparison etc.) and a Buell test day at the track, I was even tempted by the Triumph 675, but decided on the 12R in the end. I really wanted the new 2007 model, but I just couldnt justify the price (U.S $13,400) when there were so many decent used ones out there. Ill just have to deal with the heavy clutch and worry about the airbox later. I eneded up getting the Black and Amber 05 12R with 1995miles on it for U.S $7600 ride away. Some pics here:

Anyway so a few quick questions-
The shop Im getting the bike from is not a Buel or HD dealer, so they dont know s%$t about the bike,and Im sure it doesnt come with a manual. I have to go pick it up next week so here are a few quick questions to help me just get it back to my house:
1) There are 2 types of fuel here, regular unleaded and High Octane unleaded. Which one do I need?
2) Is there a low fuel warning light? or does it have a reserve tap?
3) I dont have time to read the 800 posts about the oil debate but what weight oil do i need for the hot hot humid summer thats a coming my way? I know fully synthetic is way to go?
4) Also I was planning on a Drummer for later on but have just come across a Termignoni exhaust going second hand ($500) usual price ($1300)and was wondering if anyone knew anything about them. I cant seem to find any info on them. They look a bit like the Micron, using the exhaust flap thingi Pic here:

I always use the high octane. With lower octane fuels you will get more pinging.

There is a low fuel light. You can run 17-30 miles on reserve.

Sorry can't help here

If you get the Muller Power clutch setup it is waaay easier to pull in the clutch. Takes 10 minutes to install and costs ~150 on EBay.

1) agreed. high test

2)agreed.

3)Syn3 and Formula+ in the primary chaincase. both available at harley dealerships.

4)As we've learned, the fuel injection on these bikes can be finicky. if you go with that pipe, you'll need to find someone to tune your bike properly or get the proper ecm map to avoid running lean or other potentially terminal problems. we've seen too many bikes grenade after putting aftermarket exhaust on them and running lean.
that being said, i have a micron, and lots of the fellas have drummers, odie pipes, and buell race kits. these bikes are all equipped with the proper fuel maps (available via americansportbike.com) or the race ECM from buell (dpepending on the pipe) and run like scalded dogs.

while we're on the topic of finicky...

using OEM oil filters and oil is a GREAT way to protect the longevity of your bike. as a rule of thumb, the bikes with aftermarket exhaust and oddball filters/oils are the ones to go first.

i'm just a rider. don't work for buell or anything. just reporting what i've seen.

Somewhat off topic, I saw in a Japanese cartoon called "Initial D" that Premium gasoline in Japan is actually 103 octane instead of 92 like here in the States. Is that true?

I remember pulling ID off IRC back in '99. Man it you could only get it in 3 RM files per episode.. AAAHHH the old days.

If I am correct you can get 103 octane on the east and west cost as well, no? Gas in japan is hella expensive the last I heard.

Paul,

Congrats on the Buell.

1) the higher the octane the better
2) yes you've got a low fuel light
3) use the 20W-50 synthetic of your preference (I like Mobil-1 V-Twin)
4) Never heard of the Termignoni exhaust, but it looks interesting.

BTW, what's up with the exhaust on that's on your bike now? It looks like a Ulysses exhaust that's happy to see you! Is that muffler something special for Japan only, or a home brewed job?

Termignoni makes pipes for a lot of euro bikes..u see a lot of ducs and aprillas with those on them...i think i saw one for a buell a while back..spendy suckers..n looouud....i have a friend who has Termignonis on his RC51....nice pipes.

Well, thanks for the tips guys. Ive just been reading about Octane ratings and it appears that they have different ways of rating them so a rating of 91 could mean different things in different countries.

Ill just go with the Hi-Oc for a while untill I can learn more. I just wanted to make sure I didnt screw up the O2 sensor with bad fuel.

OEM oil and oil filteres-Cool. I need to go buy something from my local Buell guy to make him happy considering I didnt by my bike from him. This will give me an excuse.

Initial D- ?? I just look him up too. Never seen it before, do know much about Jap Manga/Anime (its only in jap here so I cant read it)

Muffler- Uly muffler?? Don't scare me like that. What makes it look different? The longer exhaust tip? Actually I think that is the stock Jap 12R muffler from 05 onwards. I thought they were all like that. I think it was made quieter and longer so it doesnt burn your left foot off. ??? I plan to buy an econo Drummer later on anyway. I understand these run with the stock ECM and Airbox (no re-mapping etc.) Anyone got one with some reviews. Anyone know its its possible to get one without supplying the original muffler, as this could be and expensive hassle from Japan. once again, thanks for your help everyone.

if you need some small parts carried to Japan, like a race ecm.... ect, let me know. I'm there a few times a year.

Nah, just jokin'. thanks for the offer though. I think I can get the ecm here, the hard part will be getting a decent exhaust. The japs like shinny bolt on brand name stuff. I doubt any of them know that you also need to modify the airbox and ECM to suit. All they care about is the carbon/titanium look some noise and a brand name on the side. Im wondering if thats why Termignoni only seem to be selling their exhaust here. Maybe its crap but they know no one will call them up on it. Of all the exhausts in the shootout, the Jardine is the only one Ive seen here. I plan on being the only guy in japan with a Drummer.

As for new Buell's here the price on the XB12R tag is $12,235. Ride away i think it will cost about $13,082 and maybe more if you get a loan.
