You'd think the rear shock would be more durable, especially Buells. I mean, ask anyone, they'll tell you, the suspension on an XB is one of the best stock suspensions on the market. I would have agreed with that. My bike handled for me the way a scalpel does for a surgeon, but nooo, it up and gives out on me. Just like that.

I mean, aren't these things supposed to last forever?

Dude, you have 49,000 mile on your bike. Expect things to start wearing or breaking.

Beach, it's sarcasm.
I'm very pleased with my bike, those 49K+ miles have been most excellent, and not real gentle. I think my bike is the toughest bike I've ever ridden, next to dirt bikes.
The only real downer, is the timing, but that ain't build quality, that's life.
It seems if somethings going to break down, it's going to be at the worst time, be it cars, trucks, bikes, or whatever.

How much to re-build a rear shock?
Any ideas?
I know a new shock is going to cost me $250+.

But really get that "Yard Sale" off the road before something big falls off!

Like the rider, huh, Chuck?

Glitch, you musta had a better shock than me. Mine only lasted 27k miles. Or you're gentler and kinder to the bike.

Or maybe it's the extra 100 lbs my bike's totin'?

Dave,

Sorry to hear your rear shock gave up the ghost.
Bummer.

You might call Ed Kwaterski at Trackside Engineering for a rebuild estimate. You could go for a stiffer spring and re-valve at the same time. Cost about $250.

If you like the stock spec.s, which should be fine for your weight, best idea might be to get a take-off on eBay. Hardly used units go for about $100 or so, and they show up relatively often.

Thanks Jon.
I'll have to find a stock one on the cheap if I can.
I'd really like the re-built re-valved one, but present circumstances prevent me from doing so.

Just now got a call from a fellow 3%er, and BadWeBber.
Fran_dog has a spare shock he's going to sell me on the cheap.
Thanks Fran, and thanks to everyone that's e-mailed me with help.

Hey Glitch,

Let me ask you, with nearly 50K have you ever examined the oil pump drive gear to see how it's holding up?

Just curious that's all.

Glitch has never had any major engine work. Never pulled the cam cover off etc....

I think the most engine work he has had done was a stator.

Saintly, New12r is right, other than having to replace things I've broken, and the stator, I've had no work done on the bike at all. I've kept up on oil changes every 3000, replaced tires, brake pads, one front brake rotor, one rear brake rotor, four belts, a idle pulley, re-built the forks once, and that's about it. The engine has had the Buell Race Kit since mile 3, and have had no problems at all. A few mysteries like pinging were solved by reading the BadWeB and asking many many questions. The ping was solved by using the Buell Pro Series plugs and setting the timing, it was a little advanced from the factory.

Is the oil pump drive gear easy to check?

Fairly so after muffler removal, then just remove the oil pump and take a close look-see up underneath to verify the integrity of the drive gear up-in-der yonderways.

Bill (Reepicheep) has a great writeup on the procedure somewhere here on BadWeB.

What exactly happened to your shock?

Havent tried it on the XB yet, though I likely will in the next few weeks now that we have had a couple bona-fide XB early deaths. Very few in the whole scope of things, but it would only take me one to ruin my whole day, and it's an easy check.

As Blake says, you just drop the oil pump and look up there with a dental mirror. My old Nikon 950 in macro mode actually ended up the most useful approach... diagnosed it from the pictures.

Probably have to pull the exhaust on an XB.

At 50k, I would *definitely* at least inspect the thing. It'll cost you a new front exhaust clamp (if you follow the manual recommendation to replace it) and some teflon tape and an oil pump gasket, and maybe a few cable ties. Maybe you can do it with exhaust in place, I would have to look.

and that's about it...
That and I discovered I had a crack in my header. Couldn't say when it cracked, or for how long, because it happened while under wraps. I'm not sure if the header wrap caused it, but it did hide it. I'll not be wrapping them again, just to be safe.

Thanks Blake and Reep.
One question though, what exactly am I looking for? Reep, is that's what's on your profile picture, a bad one?

Yes, that is the actual picture I took to discover the problem.

Once I got it out, it did not look quite as bad as that picture made it look, but I would have replaced it regardless. It was probably about half dead.

I'm looking at a side view of a picture of an XB without the chin fairing, and it *might* be possible to drop that pump without pulling the exhaust.

Some bikes eat them fast, some don't touch them, somebody here posted a fairly compelling case in the Knowledge vault suggesting it was a matter of how square the machining on your oil pump mating surface was, which might also suggest the first half will wear fast and the rest will never go. I dunno...

Man, I just turned 45K miles on the M2. It's rear shock lasted around 42K. Of course I have been distracted with the Uly the last 18 months and 19K miles. Well for some reason I am riding the M2 more these days, the reason has slipped my mind at the moment.

So I guess that bubble wrap is working out for you then.

So, Blake, I guess what you're saying is I might as well take a picture or two before I bin it?
I'm sure the one in my bike looks nothing like that one.
I'm sure it'd be a worthwhile upgrade.
Now, to see if I can find some time.
Any y'all got any laying around?

Mine went last fall at just under 12,000 miles. $100 to rebuild from trackside engineering, $250 new. Just picked one up for $50 used (a few thousand miles on it) from fellow badweb'er.
