You are a grown up man, and aksidents mostly happens to young boys with little experience "with repli race bikes". The Buell is no race replica and you like all other men are in the need for a toy/hobby. The only difference between boys and men are the price on their toys: )

my S.O. hated motorcycles when we met: based on experiences from father, and brothers who are absolute idiots and live down to every stereotype & bad riding habit. I wasn't riding at the time, so it didn't come up till later

fast forward 10 years to last spring when I started shopping - she was reluctant, and voiced her opinions, but saw how much fun I was having doing test rides. I was going to hold off, but she actually told me to get the Buell 'cause it was the one that made me smile the most. 6 weeks later, I was comfortable on the CityX, and it was thoroughly broken in, and I started trying to get her on the back. her 1st ride was an eye opener, insofar as she found it comfortable, smooth, and fun. second ride we had to stop - she complained I was going too easy, and she was getting dozy! now, she comes along when she can, but certainly doesn't resent, or react badly to the bike, even though she knows I ride it much harder when I'm on my own.

I 'play' where the hazard is my own limits, not other drivers: she's come to terms with the fact that thats me, and its how/where I want to play, but its minimizing the real risks. Making her see reality, vs what she thought she knew was the real battle.

I don't know if that's a real ad or not. I do know three different people (who don't know each other) all sent it to me over the past two weeks!

The funny thing is, I met my girlfriend (of 15 years now) through motorcycling. I was one of the few guys in my club that liked riding two-up, and I'd just been dumped by this chick that decided she wanted to go back to her ex (who used to beat her, and was currently stalking her... go figure).

A friend of mine knew this girl who'd just broken up with a guy who used to take her riding and she missed being a passenger. Rider looking for passenger/passenger looking for rider... perfect match, right? It's worked out beautifully for both of us!

Due to problems with her spine, she doesn't often ride on the back of my Buell. That's why I have the K1200LT.

When I take my wife for a ride, I am very careful not to do anything that may scare her. No fast riding, no knee dragging turns, no nothing. Just nice and easy to keep her calm. I think it helps.

M2nc can ride "his" ride when he's solo, but when I'm with him he knows it has to be a much more relaxed ride or I'm not going again. I'm not a twistie queen and would flip if he drug pegs with me on the back.

I do understand that this is a release for him. I have NO desire to have my own bike. I'd rather ride with him. Our oldest daughter (almost 12) rides with him as well. The other two are waiting their turn to ride the "bike".

We all have good protective gear, helmets, gloves, boots, etc. No gear, no rides regardless of how short the distance. Go for gear with armor, not just padding. This saved Carlos this past week in my opinion. He called told me what happened, where he was, his condition and the condition of the bike. While not necessarily happy, I was very thankful that it was him on the phone and not someone else calling to tell me what hospital he was being transported to.

The MSF course is a great idea since it's been a while since you've ridden. We as wives worry, maybe sometimes too much, but it's what we do. Best of luck in talking to your wife. Maybe she could talk to some wives of local riders and get some other perspective than what she currently has.

Well, yeah, you could just buy the bike...

In the alternative, I'd try to find out what bothers her the most about the idea. I'll guess that one reason is that she's afraid that something might happen to you, leaving her to fend for herself and y'all's two kids.

As has been mentioned, the MSF idea is a great one to show that you plan to be safe. Buying and wearing good gear all of the time will do that, too.

You also might consider getting extended hospital care through your insurance company to augment any short-term/long-term disability provided by your work.

Finally, you hope that your family never has to use it, but getting a good life insurance policy through your insurance company also could alleviate some anxiety that your wife might have (regarding a worst case scenario).

I basically did all of that, and my wife supports my riding. She started off vehemently opposed (daughter of a doctor), but she came around after I did all of those things. In fact, when she saw the dollar signs on the life insurance policy, she practically kicked me out of the house to go riding...at 2am...on a Saturday...after drinking a case of beer...on bald tires...and burned out headlights. (just kidding--the tires weren't bald, but she did puncture one of them with an ice pick).

Good luck with everything.

Make yourself happy and get a bike. Mrs. Kybueller is not crazy about my bikes, and she has never ridden any of them with me, but she tolerates it I guess because she knows I love it so much. I really believe she thinks I will eventually be killed on it, not by my own hand, but some cager running over me. I long for a time where she and I could go out one night together on my Buell and get dinner, or just go for an evening out on the bike, but I guess it was not meant to be. I see other guys girls riding with them, looking pretty on a bike, and yet she does not go with me. I know she would look great on there with me. This is something I guess I just have to accept. You guys that have wives that enjoy it are lucky.

I have a 93 CBR1000F and wanted a new bike. I told the wife I was thinking of the new CBR 1000RR and the RC51. I pointed out that both bikes can run at 150mph plus. I also told her about the Buell's line of bike and pointed out that there not super bikes. I didn't tell her I was buying my Ss. She just found it in the driveway. She told me she was relieved that I picked the "slower" bike over the super fast ones. I waited a few weeks to tell her it's faster where I like to ride.

Slightly off topic but I have a question for those of you who are married to a "bike hater"

Why did you get married? I don't want to sound harsh, but I just wonder sometimes why people do the things they do.

For a lot of us Motorcycling is more than a hobby. It is part of who we are. Weather you currently own a bike or not. Your significant other must have known you were interested in motorcycles. If they were so against motorcycles, why did they marry you? Did they think they could change you?

It would be the same thing if you knew your spouse was a shopaholic, or a debt king/queen. You know what their bad habits are, and people rarely change.

To me it just seems like a huge inconvenience.

Ok, some people are just afraid of motorcycles. She'd probably never get on it. Some things to consider: if you get one, you'll probably spend more time with the bike and your riding buddies. This will definitely be an issue. Is the bike worth the marriage? Is there another hobby like Jet skis or something she'd be willing to do with you? Of course she'll tell you now that you can do what you want, but that's not what she means. Luckily for me my fiance likes bikes and likes riding on the back. Not everyone has that luck though. As for selling the Ford, you don't have to buy brand new, I found my '04 12S with 1200 miles on it in showroom condition for 6300 bucks and part of the factory extended warranty. Plus, if you buy used, you won't loose your arse when you decide to sell it in a few months after your wife expresses her true feelings about you having a bike.

Too much together is bad. Someone who is unwilling to allow their spouse to have time to themselves has serious issues.

I think you need to balance your time so that one doesn't dominate the schedule, but you definitely need time to do your own thing.

she is a great passenger and loves to tear it up. its hard to see, but most of the wear marks on the side of the tire are with her on it.( With all the protective gear ofcourse!) once she gets over the fear, she will realize that feeling of freedom is like no other. And the vibrator thing is the truth
my woman has never been on a bike before and now i cant get her off it.

That is pretty serious. Threatening to leave someone over something they love to do, and then going through with it. If ANY woman were to tell me that, then they can go and not let the door hit them in the ass. That I would not stand for.

My wife was really into riding with me in the early years of our relationship. Years have passed and I have not changed in that respect but she has drifted away from riding quite a bit.
Just last weekend I came home, fashionably late, from a ride and as she was chewing me out she stated "the world does not revolve around motorcycles!" I just stood there - dumfounded - with my helmet in my hand. After a minute or two and while my mind was trying to understand her point of view (really!), she said "Well, maybe for you it does." She went for a ride in the rain with me yesterday and loved it. Thanked me profusely for taking her and all seems right with the world. Today looks like another great day for a ride.

Her ex was an HD man, and an A$$

Talk to her more about this, maybe he was a cheating A$$ because of the places he hung out. Maybe she is scared of you finding someone "younger and more attractive who loves Motorcycle's" Anyway communication on both parts is a must, you have to explain to her why this is so important to you, but you must be willing to listen to why she really hates it so much. Sometimes Tonya has to bring me back down to earth when the sun is shining and point out my honey-do list that has been neglected.
