I lowsided yesterday. Most of the left hand bits broke off, as to be expected, i.e. blinkers, bar end mirrors, shifter, peg, etc.. The thing that is the real bummer is the dented frame. Thats where the repair cost starts to rise. Progressive insurance has a policy of not repairing frames for liabilities sake, which makes sense. So in addition to the cost of replacing the broken items, another $700 to $1400 for the frame will be added plus the $70.00 per hour labor charge to put everything on the new frame. I am really hoping that my bike won't be totaled as I absolutely love it and am not really interested in a new bike. The NADA book value of my 2005 XB12S is around $7500, per the Progressive guy. Does anyone think that the repair costs might overshadow the NADA cost, thus equaling a totaled bike? Here are some pics for reference: And my helmet:

You think it might be prudent to try and save money by installing some things myself? I have never dealt with this before and any help/suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Thank god for gear. Probably would not be visiting this board if I wasn't wearing my helmet. But judging by my ground up knees, it's about time I invest in some kevlar jeans. |

As long as the frame appears structurally sound (just scratched and dented) I'd forgo having it fixed. It looks like most of the cosmetic frame damage can be covered with frame pucks. Or the carbon fiber frame covers which aren't exactly cheap. I guess it boils down to if you need a pristine bike and the hit to your insurance, or you can live with a rideable yet battlescarred bike and no hit to your insurance. Purely personal decision. I'm not an insurance expert. I know some people on here have totalled their bike and bought it back at a reduced price from the insurance company. It also seems that the track crowd doesn't really care if their bike has 'character' so you could probably sell it as a track bike. Believe me, I'm not trying to pour salt on your wound but I think the frame pucks could've prevented the frame damage. I know this from personally dropping my bike rather hardly in front of alot of people. My pride was wounded more then my ride. +1 for frame pucks. |

Man I just lowsided yesterday. It is still not great out there for riding. Glad to hear you made it out ok too. I am pretty damn sore today but alive. I would do as much of the work as possible myself if I were you. I am lucky and dont believe anything happened to my frame, but cannot be sure yet cause the bike was covered in mud. Luckily i kept the bike up long enough to avoid the asphalt and slid into a muddy ditch. You should be able to fix just about everything yourself except the frame/paint. Besides you get parts much cheaper when you buy them. |

Talk to the insurance company to see what they'd want from you for a salvage offer. You might be surprised how cheap you can get it, and those frame dings are nothing to worry about from a structural standpoint. I've got much worse on my racebike and It sees 140mph every 2 minutes at least 50 times a day on race day... plus 2 practice days. Might look ugly but these frames DO take abuse and they DO crash well. |

Yeah frame pucks and sliders definitely would be a great purchase. I will get them when this all sorts out. Dong, I read your post yesterday after coming home. I am glad to hear you are okay as well. I am okay with a dented frame, but don't really have the money to replace all the other parts on the bike. Handlebars, left side controls, left side shifter/peg, left side scoops, and indicators. Plus my rear wheel has a big dent in the rim. Funny though, its on the right side. All other damage is is fine by me. It gives it character. |

The insurance company had mentioned something about salvage price and stuff. But I am not sure I get it. He had mentioned that if the NADA value is $7500, that the repair cost PLUS the salvage value must not exceed the book value or else it will be totaled. How come this doesn't make sense in my brain. (it could be the pounding headache) |

Basically if the insurance company would break even by just totaling the bike and salvaging it they will not even bother to send it to a shop for repairs. So if the amount the would sell it for as a salvaged bike plus the repair total is very close to or is 7500 they will total the bike. An example would be if it cost 2000 to fix and the salvage value was 5500 they would total the bike because it would be 7500. I hope that helps. |

The insurance company will total it. If the frame has any damaged at all, deep gouges or scratches it is done. Why no frame pucks? |

Check with your insurance company. A salvaged bike can be expensive, if not impossible, to insure. If makes absolutely no sense that pucks aren't standard on all Buells. Are you listening, BMC??? |

Slap a puck on it and ride it if they want to total it. Just withdraw your claim and fix it yourself. Everything looks pretty minor and easy fixes. Glad you're OK. |

Tx, I think I might just do that... "Why no frame pucks?" Err... Didn't really like the looks of em. Of course I realize the irony of that thought now. |

I forgot to mention in the first post that I'm glad you made it out well. The hardware can be fixed, the 'software' is much more valuable. Take care and get back out on the road soon. |

I've seen in Person in the last year 4 bikes with pucks have the frames totalled including mine.... |

Tx, I am thinking that I will do just that; withdraw the claim and do the repairs myself. I figure the initial costs would be eventually outweighed by the increased premiums. I will let you all know what the insurance guy says. If he says total, I will be in the market for a couple things, so if everyone could keep their eyes peeled for handlebars, pegs, controls and indicators. I will gladly purchase them from you. The only major cost would be that rear wheel. Not sure what to do there. Might be a good time to switch colors. Has anyone had any luck with repairing dented rims? This one has a 2 inch fold in the bead on the right side. Not sure if its possible... |

You're welcome to my stock bars if you decide to withdraw your claim. PM me an address and don't worry about shipping. Pay it forward to the next guy. Hey what are you using for mirrors? I've got my lollipops too if you want those. |

Tx, I appreciate the offer and will let you know tomorrow what I will decide to do. I am meeting with the Progressive guy and the Buell guys tomorrow. We'll see how it all comes out. Keepin my fingers crossed for a non-total. |

Let me know because otherwise another BadWebber (Francisco) went down today too. He got rear-ended at a traffic light after getting only five minutes of saddle time after I helped him install new Crossroads bars. I told him I'd hook him up with any of my stock parts on hand. I offered the bars and mirrors to you first though, so you've got dibs if you want them. He said if he does fix it himself, he'd surf the parts available on the badweb and probably ebay and see what he could find. I suggested he post a list so we can all donate whatever we have on hand that we're not using like we've done for so many others. I dunno though, from the sound of it his bike is probably going to be a total loss. He got smacked in the ass hard enough to literally bow the frame outward on both sides the way I understood what he was telling me. The amazing part is after he flew through the air like superman, he got up and walked away unscathed. I told him I'd have had to replace my helmet too and spend a night in jail on that one. Why? LOL! Because I'd have had a hard time resisting the urge to beat the idiot that ran over me within a half inch of his life with it. Be careful people! ATGATT |

After my lowside my insurance company paid for a replacement frame $1100. the amount to total a bike is 75% of NADA value. That was from the State Farm reps mouth. I took the money replaced the important stuff and am going to stick a puck on it. Glad to hear your ok ride on! |

Tx, Go ahead and give those parts away. I appreciate the offer but think that going with an insurance claim might be the best. Of course, if he ends up not taking them and I end up repairing my bike then I might be able to use them even so. I will let you know. Thanks everyone for all the info and support. Its been rather pleasant considering. |
