I'd like to retro-fit some functional headlights on my '04 XB12S Buell.
I have a shop manual, but can't seem to find a simple, logical, color-coded electrical schematic?
The headlight plug has 4 wires on it: Black, which I assume is ground, White, Yellow and Orange with a white stripe.
Can anyone please give me the wire location/destinations?
Thank you very much in advance!

Black - ground
Orange/White - position (not used on domestic)
Yellow - low beam
White - hight beam

on this note....
over here in good old NZ. i tend to ride at night, most of the area's is in the country, they don't have street lights!!
(small joke there)

now my question... is it ok to put a 100watt light bulb in the low beam light??

will the charging handle it?

AJ you will probably melt the housing or lens. They are kind of notorious for that any way. I would worry a little about the wiring harness also, you will be drawing round 9 amps. The charging circuit is good for 35 amp if I remember correctly. I would recommend the HID upgrade instead.

Thanks Uwgriz!
I was running H-4 bulbs with both bulbs ON with low beam & both bulbs on with high beam, in my stock "plastic headlight", with the standard 10 amp fuse, without any problems.

Does anyone know what the application for the Orange/White wire is on the non-domestic models?

It's for a position light which is basically like a parking light. It's required on European bikes. You'll have an empty socket between your high and low beams in the center of the headlight housing where the European bikes have a little bulb. It's on the same circuit as the taillight, license plate light and flasher (accessory circuit).

Liquorbox,

That socket uses a 194 bulb.

One of these days, I'm gonna stick one of those in the socket.

I actually replaced my plastic crap with a pair of these: http://www.jpcycles.com/catalog/2006HarleyUpdateCa talog/0309.html
The 4" Halogens on the bottom right.
They DO have a small "parking bulb" in the bottom of each shell, so I guess I'll be able to hook it up?!
It's nice that they use the H-4 too, so I don't have to ride around with one headlight.
I had already converted & been running my plastic stocker with H-4's for the past several months, with no problems.
I'll post Pics tomorrow if anyone is interested?

I put in a HID, which gives you the extra light but without the heat. Pricey ($200) and a non trivial install (have to hide ballasts and relays). Looks cool and works great though.

If I were going to try again, I might try and find some driving lights that are about the same size as the stock enclosures, but metal and made for bigger bulbs. Then fabricate up mounting brackets to make them look very much like stock.

I saw a set at the import tuner section of my local Pep Boys that had blue LED's that would light up an outer ring that might have looked cool on a 9sx. But most of that stuff is fairly low quality, so after I spend hours creating a mounting system, the things might just start looking ratty after a year anyway... so a better quality brand (like the ones mentioned in this and other threads) might be a better choice.

What’s up guy’s. Just my 2 cents on how 2 get the most out of your lightning headlight set up. First replace the bulbs with some nice Xeon lights. Philips is a great brand. Then take off your fly screen & locate the white snap 2gether wire harness. Going in and out R 4 wires. White, black, yellow & orange/brown stripe. Using needle nose pliers, pull out and switch your yellow 4 the orange/brown. Now when you click on your high beams both lights stay on. There are other really good explanations on this site 2 tell you how this is done. The hole thing should take you 30 min, and you’ll love the way it looks. Oh did I mention it works like it came stock.

High Intensity Discharge and most of the guys are getting them from fullpower link. They are a little more complicated to install but the results are fantastic. They take much less amperage to function too.

I was riding at night last night with the new HID... first time on the interstate since I installed it.

I am lighting up reflective signs from a mile away... and thats with the HID aimed low.

It's expensive and a time consuming install (not so much hard, just a lot of little fussing), but they really work.
