I guess it is okay to not hate IL4's, you just have to remember to hold them in proper disdain.

But I consider my two Hondas, a 1974 Super 90 and 1978 Trail 90, to be unworthy dislike because they are yellow. If they were red they'd have to go.

OK I just read in my mag that Honda is thinking of producing a street legal version of the RC211V based on the 2006 Moto GP Bike, that is a V-5 not a V-4. The V-4 is in the new RC212V.
I'm No fan of Honda's but a bike capable of what this could be is mighty tempting. As long as it's reliable and at a reasonable price.
I love the Ducati Desmosedici but at 60 grand, and you had to own a 999R or S (Can't remember which one)thats close too another 30 grand, unless I win Mega Millions I can only look and drool.

Wait a minute, capable of what? Killing me quicker? My Firebolt is enough! Don't get me wrong, no slam on Honda or Il4's or whatever. I personally just do not need, or have a use for a bike like that.

Don't get me wrong, I love my bolt. Since I got it my ZX-10R has seen very little street time. The bolt is IMO a perfect street bike and I will always have one in the garage. But I also like going to track days and having a bike I could ride to the track and in relative safety (keyword RELATIVE), scare the crap out myself is appealing to me.

What's wrong with Honda??

Actually there is nothing wrong with Honda. In fact they are so good at what they do that I just find them completely lacking in soul or character, and that is hwat turns me off them. I would rather have a bike with some character and even some minor flaws than just a super efficient machine.
Hondas just don't stir my soul like some other bikes do.

The Desmosedici isn't Ducati's first attempt at a V4. You'd need to go back 40 odd years to see Ducati's first V4. No it's not a sportbike either. In fact, it's almost American, as the name might suggest.

Nope - that is Ducati's attempt to break into the Latino market with the A Pollo

or "TO THE CHICKEN"

I bought a v4 honda in 1984, a Saber sort of a necked sport bike at the time, 700cc v4. Same basic engine as intersepter and magna.shaft drive and watercooled, It was totaley reliably and fun to ride.

Also one reason I bought it was the lack of chrome. Even the pipes and mufflers were black.

Quiz: Anyone remember why Xb9ser's Saber was 700cc rather than 750cc?

Something to do with tariffs and some MC company....can't think of the company's name right now....?

Yep,

HD thought that they could improve sales if they got the U.S. to put a huge tariff on import bikes over 700cc.

That was before they decided to invest in better products and the clothing line.

Yep - "tariff beater" 700cc bikes... my first bike was an '84 VF700F Interceptor, big chunk of change less than the 750. Talk about crappy valve train! Still have a warm place in my heart for V4s though.

Yeah, If I remember correctly the cam bearings burned up in a lot of those early Honda V4's.

About the tariff- I'm certain that knows the whole story could tell it better than I can, but there's more to it than simply Harley getting the government to bail them out. It was imposed at what was arguably one of the weakest points in Harley's history- the end of the AMF era. Also, the Japanese were flooding the US market with bikes at that time which drove their own prices down in what appeared to be an effort to kick Harley while they were down. In the end Harley actually petitioned the ITC to end the tariff early.

About the Honda V4s, I'd love to have one if it's properly built and it's put in the right bike. I've got an '82 Sabre with a 750cc V4 in my garage. I love the V4 layout and power delivery, but that motor is a train wreck. They all suffered from poor oil circulation to the top end which resulted in excessive cam wear. The timing chain rattles, the motor overheats, the tranny has false neutrals, and getting the carbs off is a nightmare.

I like a decent amount of the honda standard and cruisers, but I tried 3 honda sportbikes and never liked them.
You can't argue their track effectiveness, but imo they just are not good daily commuter bikes.
The F2 I owned was just about the buzziest bike that would numb your hands/wrists in 20 minutes of traffic.
My CBR600RR had the same craptastic tires my Firebolt started with and I didnt have it long enough to get a different set. I traded it on my first Buell after only 1 year

I have owned an 89 VFR, 93 VFR and a 96 VFR. All great daily bikes(if you overlook the charging problems on earlier models). Had the chance to ride a track prepped RC45 a few years back, I STILL want one. Slightly underpowered when compared to some other 750 sportbikes of the era, but the v4 makes great mid-range torque (sound familiar?) so you don't really miss the few hp except on long straights. The later ones had gear driven cams, gawd I love that sound.: )
