I am trying to loosen the rear axle enough to slacken the belt so I can remove the idler pulley, then the axle and wheel. When I turn the axle the 15 times as stated in the service manual the belt does not go slack and the whole rear wheel assembly is moving with the axle. In other words I am loosening the axle and the wheel is moving all the way over into the belt guards. Seems like a bearing is seized on the axle or something. Anyone have this issue before and how did you resolve it?

Sounds like your bearing is frozen to the axle. I would use a little penatraiting oil and let it sit. If that doesnt work I have heard a few people use a tiedown strap to hold the wheel to the left side of the swingarm. Then they loosen the axle. This may work for you. Mine had no problems. Be sure to use anti-seize when reassembling.

this happened to me too. I've got 2 words for ya.

Rubber Mallet


When you put it back together put some Antiseize on the axle and you won't have this problem next time.

GOT IT. After doing a search and reading other peoples stories I decided to try the ratchet strap method. BINGO, it worked. Seems the guy that did it for me at the deal didn't lube the axle properly with anti seize. The axle was very dry and showed some signs of corrosion. I'll check the bearings and make sure they are ok before I mount the tire on the rim and use plenty of lube going back on.

Beachbuell - FWIW you don't really have to take the idler pulley off to get the rear tire off. I don't know why they so to do that in the service manual.

Glad you got it broken loose.

I needed to remove the idler pulley to move my exhaust straps anyway. I'm killing a few birds with one stone kinda.

You don't need to remove the idler to get the exhaust straps loose either... ; )

When someone moves them so you can not access them through the pulley you do..... Anything else now..... Experts?

You also did not need to remove the rear wheel to change the tire....
