I am thinking about painting my header with some VHT or Eastwood exhaust paint and doing a partial wrap with DEI exhaust wrap, similar to the Confederate Hellcat. Has anyone ever painted their exhaust with this type of high-temp paint? Pros... cons? | ||

Mine was a waist of time, the stainless steel that the pipes are made of dont like the paint I guess. I prepped mine great and it still flaked off. Firemanjim said that they should be bead blasted for best results, but if you take the header off just have it ceramic coated. | ||

I'd like to see some closeup shots - I've never seen anyone who was able to wrap each pipe individually like that. | ||

Wardog, I'd like to see a close up pic of that wrap job. It looks really good. Haven't seen many that look that good. What brand of wrap did you use? I found DEI, but have heard of Thermo-Tec. Not sure which one to buy. | ||

We have used Thermo-Tec for a few years on our racebikes and it is extremely good. You should use their sealant/paint spray on them once the wrapping is done to stop the wrap discolouring.  | ||

I have used DEI a number of times. I like it. I have no experience with the Thermo-tec but heard good things. I use the DEI Header paint after also. Real good stuff. I have also painted my Jardine with the black DEI Paint and it came out pretty good and has lasted the season. | ||

I have a high temp powder coat in colors, i am doing my blue X1 pipes blue to match the bike, it is good to 1600 degrees and it is non stick, if you are interested in that, we have black, red, blue and can get access to other colors, it is a bit expensive for the paint, but it will not come off. www.specialized-powdercoating.com | ||

Thanks for the compliment Lightningrob. I used DEI 1.5 inch exhaust wrap along with the DEI paint from Eastwood. Before I wrapped the exhaust, I painted the headers with Dupli-Color High Temp paint. The key in getting a good wrap is to wet it down as you wrap and pulling it tight. If you want to do the job right, take the headers off. Even though you can wrap them while on the bike, it's just a pain in the a$$ as I have done this before. I'll get you the pictures this evening as I'm currently at work. | ||

Rob - I wouldn't paint the headers. They get quite hot, and the paint won't last very long. I repainted my Blast header with hi-temp paint and it hasn't lasted well. You can get your headers ceramic coated by Jet-Hot or HPC. It will look great, last, and make them run cooler. It costs less than $200. | ||

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Wardog, I'll be working tonight, but I will look for the pics when I get home. Trojan, that's a wild looking system on that bike. Looks killer, though. And it sold me on wrapping the pipes up. If anyone else has any pics on their exhaust wraps or painted pipes, go ahead and post some pics. Again, I appreciate all the advice from everyone. | ||

I painted mine black with VHT, and it looks much better than the stock "golden rainbow" and has lasted two years so far with no problem. Mine is an '05 with the smooth stainless headers. Later years had a texture on the headers, so results may be different. Previously I tried a different brand of header paint purchased at AutoZone (can't remember which but it was a name-brand) and it bubbled, cracked and peeled the first time I fired up the engine. Not all paints are created equal. The VHT applied in a light coat worked great for me. Here's a pic to give you the idea (not the best, but just happened to have it here at work). The lighting is off, but you can get the flavor anyway.  | ||
