I'd like to paint my primary and ignition covers flat black. Would you guys recommend a high temp paint for this application? I know a couple of you have done this. What did you use? | ||

HD sells rattle-can black wrinkle finish. i picked up some with the same intention to minus the gold on the 12. no ambition yet. i'm curious as well who was successful with what. | ||

yeah, that would be optimal. I don't know anywhere around Houston to get it done though. Anyone got a company I could ship my covers off to for powdercoating? I'd also like to get my rims chromed if anyone knows a good company for that. | ||

wrinkle finish - someone was saying they painted the grey portion of their lower fairing with that. What does it look like? Does it have a textured finish like spray-on bedliner? | ||

I painted my grey lower fairing piece with Wrinkle finish. It looks, well, wrinkly...Y'ever see an old singer sewing machine? The black part that weighs 72 lbs is wrinkle finished. I got the paint at an auto parts store. VHT makes it and I've heard it comes in colours too. Plasti kote has some too. It's dead easy, just thin coats 3 or four and comes out looking real cool. i used the wrinkle finish to paint my timing cover. came out just as Kdan describes... wrinkly  it must dry a certain way, its like the paint shrinks up causing little waves in the paint. definitely didn't come out looking like the factory finish on the primary or clutch inspection covers though. | ||

brian, i know you've pretty much disassembled and reassembled your bike but how hard is it to remove the the covers? major surgery? every time i get up the energy to dig in, i say forget it. but i hate that gold! must... kill... it. (Message edited by typeone on February 13, 2007) | ||

Phil www.specialized-powdercoating.com the site is fairly new and has very little info actually, but it does have pricing for motorcycles and I do work there so we have done about four buells one of mine and two of my harleys. Wheels, covers, brackets we know how they are supposed to be and will make sure they are right. The number is on the site if you wish to call. | ||

I've had my primary cover off. It wasn't too hard, just time consuming. If I remember correctly, it's got 16 bolts around the perimeter, you have to remove the shifter and clutch cable, and loosen the chain tensioner (and oh yeah, drain the primary fluid). The cover should then come right off. And when you put it back on, don't do like me and think it shrunk or something and throw a fit because it won't go back on. You have to lift the slack chain up at the bottom so it'll clear the chain tensioner. LOL! I crack myself up sometimes. I was even beating on mine with a rubber hammer trying to get it seated back where I could thread the bolts. After first stomping around the garage cussing it, and then later pouting in the back yard, I finally remembered the chain was hanging down in the way of the chain tensioner. After that I was done in 15 minutes and putting fresh primary fluid back in it. When you put something like that back on, get all the bolts started, make sure the gasket is going to seat properly, and then tighten them like you would wheel lug nuts. Anotherwords, crisscross back and forth to the opposite bolt so you don't tweak the cover and cause a leak. Oh and here's another little tip I learned the hard way. When you take a drainplug out of something, put it back to torque specs or leave it out completely. I was dumb enough to just spin mine back in finger tight and then forgot about it. After I filled the primary fluid and checked for leaks, I got on it and rode home from my dad's place. When I got home, there was primary fluid all down the side of the bike and I had to replace the fluid again!!!! I guess it's funny now... (-: | ||

Thanks for the tip Dale. I may just take you up on that after I get back from MBIV. Also looking for a good chromer for my rims if anyone can turn me on to somebody. Basically, I want the bike pretty much blacked out with chrome rims and jet-hotted headers and muffler. | ||

How about some design wrap - I can't remember which site it was but - I went on a super car rally across europe in the summer - every car had amazing designs on their cars from louie vutton to super hero branded lamboghnis etc. Anyway - I've seen alot of bikes use this stuff also. It looks pretty cool once on - as if its been painted gloss. I would like to change my main silver frame XB9SX to black or gloss black also. Anybody have any info on that wrap stuff - is it any good ? | ||

Clinton the primary is a cake walk. the cam cover... well if i wasn't taken the rest of the motor apart, would be a lot of work to just make the cover a different color. i wouldn't say "major surgery" but it is a pain in the a55. brian | ||
