Saw this windshield on National Cycle's site. The bike in the photo is a Honda 919 but I think the bars would be similar enough. I'm trying to find a shield that would extend my riding season here in the midwest. Anyone know if this would fit an XB12ss? http://shop.nationalcycle.com/perl/cycle/large_pho to?mv_session_id=H9enTJxY&mv_arg=N8101&search_mode l=hd%2d101 |

C'mon, I wasn't asking whether or not you liked the shield. I'm just trying to find a way to keep riding year round. If I can put a taller windshield on the bike (ugly or not) and get a couple of extra months riding out of the year I'd do it. I don't plan on leaving the shield on in warmer months. I know that the bars on the 919 (Suzuki SV's and Ducati Monsters would probably be similar too) can't be too much different from the Buell. I'm mostly concerned with clearance issues around the headlight assembly. Any "constructive" input would be appreciated. I hate leaving such a neat motorcycle parked just because it's below thirty degrees. (Message edited by Xb12ssrider on February 11, 2007) |

From the photo it appears that your hands are shielded as well. I'd be interested to find out if it fits your XB12SS. I ride year around as well and I could live with its appearance for two or three months a year to gain some additional saddle time. |

It looks like it might. I'd be interested in knowing if it works, quite frankly. I don't care if it's ugly. I'm with you, dude. If I cared about looks, I wouldn't have bought a motorcycle. I would have bought a Ferrari. Looks, shmooks. Best all around versatile bike out there, in my opinion, is a TDM 850, and it's BUTT UGLY. But, I know a guy with one and now, I want one. Let us know if it works, man. Mark |

Actually I liked the looks of the TDM850. I bought a 1993 GTS1000 around the time the TDM came out (which I still have) and if I every come across a clean example I would probably add one to the garage. Just like the GTS the TDM never had a big following in the states just mainly Europe. As far as the windshield I had one like that on my 1982 XJ1100 Yamaha Maxim, basically you need to pony up the dough and see if it fits. If it does not rest assured you will be able to sell it on Ebay to some guy wanting to get there 70's or 80's japanese standard back on the road so no worries. |

You could buy some Gerbing heated clothing. I was wearing this stuff when I rode home for xmas (new orleans to detriot) a couple years ago. Works great!! Just hard wire to your batt and leave the wire sticking out from under the seat. You can even get a thermosat that goes with it. I was good and comfortable down to 20 25 degrees on the highway. But when the sun goes down forget it. I ride a 2004 xb12s by the way. |

Oh found something else for you. Do a search on google fro "cee bailey buell xb12". The first link at the top click on it. $119.00 You could combine this with hand guards from the cityx also.

Thanks for the info. Like you said, I'll probably just have to give it a try. A long time ago (when I was first considering a Buell) I saw a shield like this one on a XB9S but never took note of the brand. I was hoping this thread might find someone who had tried it. Anyway....when I get it I'll let you know how it works. |

I agree they are ugly, but if he wants to ride in 30 degree weather it might just work. You can always change back when it warms up. |

I like the idea that it protects the hands. That's damn near sold me... |

the other negative to the large handlebar mounted windshield is the "barn-door" effect !after getting up to speed there is so much negative pressure behind the screen that it feels like "this really big hand is trying to push you forward into the back side of the windoor screen !!" (c'mon people what has happened to your sense of humor) |

its a naked bike, leave it nude. I was riding in rain down to 35 degrees, frost and cold at 22. As long as the roads are free of Ice and Snow, I ride. Get some heated gear, wear a full face helmet, and ride it all year long. 348 days last year, snow might keep me from getting that this year though. Leave that clear windshield and cat box milk crate back in the 1970s. |

I once had a detachable windshield for my Sporty. It made the bike handle horribly in the twisties. After the third or fourth use I stopped using it because I hated the way it changed the handling so much. Now I wear an electric vest with zip on sleeves under a snug fitting leather vest under my Roadcrafter suit. I also wear a pair of fleece pants. I have electric grip wraps (soon real honest to god electric grips) and a good pair of warm gloves. Under the gloves I wear silk liners and over the gloves I wear triple digit rain covers because they make a huge difference when it comes to keeping the cold air off the hands. I also have the Buell handguards. I've stayed warm in the low 20's. I've stayed warm enough for a 30 minute ride doing 70 mph in the high teens. Any colder and I would probably invest in a pair of Hippo hands (the universal enduro ones. I will never mount a big windshield on any of my bikes ever again. I just don't like how they upset the aerodynamics of a perfectly designed chassis. |

Come on now, of course the smoked CeeBailys looks like ass on red bikes. They should shoot the idiot in advertising that put that pic up. Clear screen painted lower half black.

Xb12ssrider, I have a National Cycle (Street Shield EX) on my bike. It's smaller than the one you're asking about. I am very happy with it and the way the bike handles with this shield. (No barn door effect) In fact, it seems to smooth the air flow better than my body. It keeps the wind blast off me. A good pair of insulated gloves keeps my hands warm. If you think you need more for your hands, The Uly or CityX grip shields will work.
P.S.- It an be put on or removed in 2 minutes. (Message edited by old_man on February 11, 2007) |
