As Im about to embark on a new city cross adventure very soon - I wondered what the protocol for security is ? Any tips on what device or lock I should get ?I am getting the datatool immobilizer fitted but what else should I be thinking of when I cruise around town - park up etc. Isit advisable to always lock / chain it to something or is the datatool system good enough ? ( Im guessing not but just thought I'd ask all you experienced XB'ers anyway ) |

Brake disc lock works good and are small enough to carry with you. Not much fun if you forget to remove it before you take off! Enjoy your City X , I love mine!!! |

Xena makes a disk lock alarm you might like. It eats batteries pretty quick, but it does add an extra level of protection. |

If you're on the road, use the preferred advrider method- get a motel room on the ground floor and wheel the bike into your room! |

What Hughlysses said! I haven't yet found a hotel door that I can't fit my S3 into by turning the mirrors in. Use the free newspaper to put down on the carpet. Don't know if Kryptonite still makes them but they had a motion sensor alarm with a 36 inch cable. Makes a HECK of a racket if even slightly moved. (Message edited by slaughter on January 17, 2007) |

I'd make sure my insurance was up to date, and that I had a position on a waiting list for a TT somewhere I'd miss my hid and translucid plastics though... |

motel room times 2. I've done this on every overnight trip I've taken thus far. I have to take my bar end mirrors off to get it in with the Crossroads bars, but that just takes a second or two with an allen wrench and I'm in. When I ride to work or park somewhere during the day, I use my Xena disklock alarm. |

My brother working at the big insurance company starting with P* says hotels are prime stomping grounds for bike thieves (it is part of their regular diet). thieves avoid flashing lights and sounds as it cuts their window shopping short. If you don't want to dish out $100 for a zena, at least get $15 personal alarm that is triggered by vibration or infrared light. Also, a $3 blinking LED from Radio Shack is good addition. Just one more thing that may make thieves reconsider and move along ( but the pros will test and bump your bike to see if a warning chirp is given). Remember, once your bike is stolen by a pro it will be parted out on ebay which is hard to recover / catch. |

.45 Colt Light sleeping dogs at home. On the road I always try to get ground floor rooms. I don't roll the bikes in but I make sure i can see them. I don't pack the .45 on road trips anymore, too much hassle if you get pulled over for speeding. Something about carrying a gun makes cops freak out, not like we have a 2nd Amendment or anything? I do carry a knife (or 3) and a 4 cell Mag Lite that makes a great light and a really good club. In my best Mr T. voice, I pity the fool, I find messing with my bike in the middle of the night! |

Dave.. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times.. The Mag light (and it's relatives) is not a club and is not used as such by persons of good standing.. It is however, a very good 'hastily improvised defensive tool'. Some day, when face to face.. I'll show you a few things.. Just ask nice, I still love teaching. |

Your going to laugh at this one. I guess my dyslexia got the best of me. I swear I read Daves post as Colt 45 Light sleeping dogs at home. So of course the first thing I picture is dave standing in his front yard throwing empty Colt 45 bottles, while a pack of feral dogs roams about. How very white trash... |

Nice imagery monkey. Now I picture Dave taking target practice on said Colt 45 empties. Maybe cappin' one of those feral pooches in the arse. |

I kind of like mine. Lew Horton special from S&W custom shop in late 80s.One of 1500. 629 44 Mag. 3in barrel unflutted cyclinder and round butt 44 mag and the lightest trigger of any handgun I have ever shot.Double action is smoother than most single actions.

Only if you have an old Camaro on blocks in the front yard. Maybe we can work in an episode of Cops?

no suprisingly enough ive been using it ever since some asshead tried to jam a screwdriver in my ignition havent had a problem since i throw a towel over my windscreen but it really dosent touch anything..the tarp and a chain around the back wheel and a good padlock in one of the disc holes....and my paintball gun in the window sill...im still waitin to hear the tarp come off so i can hose some dick with paint and call the cops....heey theres some guy with pink paint all over him runnin down the street u might wanna check that out. |

The paintball idea is awesome... Wondering if there are any legal problems where the culprit could take you to the cleaners...only asking cause I'm tempted to go get me one for this purpose. For example, haven't people run into trouble because it can be mistaken for a real fire arm and thus under the brandishing a fire arm can of worms? If you are lucky enough to take shots from the house, I think there are no scenarios that could work against you. Thoughts anyone? |

well for me i dont really want to kill some doofass just for tryin to hork my bike...but i sure would garner a bit of satisfaction from makin him cry a little....dunno bout the legal ramifications...i have a friend who hosed a guy with his paintball gun while he was trying to break into his truck one night....the cops thought it was pretty funny...he lit that sumbitch up....23bps at close range dont think that dosent hurt a little and its pretty hard to deny u were in the driveway breaking into something seems how ur covered in paint....besides id prob do mare damage to my bike then anything else if i let bertha loose( double barrel parker sawed off) out the window. |

It'd be nice to be able to get some of the pepper balls that I saw on some TV show to fire out of the paint ball gun. hard to steal anything when you're on the ground puking and gagging. |

Just cause ya shoot em, that don't mean ya gotta killem. You would be surprised how many times you can shoot a thug, an not strike a kill zone. Not that I have given it any thought or anythin... |

That doesn't always work out so well Treadmarks, people are killed by the damnedest things sometimes, and other times a failed parachute won't even put 'em in the ground. |

An NRA sticker along with a "I DON'T DIAL 911" sticker would be a nice complement to the colt 45! I usually carry a Glock 26, however, I have a concealed carry permit. All 36 of the "good states" will issue them as long as you are not a felon or insane. |

Found a link to the alarm I use. Really handy gadget - use it on bikes, on luggage in hotel - very handy and easy to use. IT does nothing to actually LOCK your stuff, it's just a light, easy to pack/transport alarm system |

I kinda like all the answers. I have a carry permit that is honored in most states for the "final confrontation" but I currently use the "driveway alert" I got at Home Depot. It is a small motion sensor, about 4"x3" I attach to my bike or boat if I'm using that for fishing trips, and a receiver, about 5"x4" you have in the room with you. When anyone comes even near your bike a loud tone goes off at the receiver only with a high or low sound level. Like others I always try and park in front of my room window for visual awareness also. It has occasionally gone off with a curious looker but at least I can respond and see whats up, usually with my sidearm. Its directional with about a 30 degree cone field and goes off when triggered at about 20 feet so you can focus away from normal foot traffic. Batteries have lasted three weeks or more as I turn it off in the morning. Its also great for sleeping in remote areas or campgrounds in a camper. Just hang it on a nearby tree. Range is about 150' or more. Have fun on your trips and stay safe, Bob |

Xena +1. It has a pretty loud internal alarm. Nice feature is that it alarms YOU if you forget to remove the lock! As far as I know Buell isn't on the hot list of often stolen bikes. Try to park it out of sight. A motorcycle cover can help, however in an inter-city situation bums will steal the cover off the bike. A cover and Xena disc lock is a good combination, there is no way you can get the cover off without setting off the Xena if you don't know exactly what you are doing and doing it fast. http://www.xenasecurity.com/product/motorbikes/XN1 8/page1/ The XN-18 uses a single 3 volt lithium battery and has a Flashing blue LED. I just got this, the older Xena used 6 LR-44 button batteries that were only good for about 6 months. I think the Lithium battery will last longer than the carbon-zinc LR-44's but I just got this thing so I don't know. |

The trouble with Disk locks is; any four guys with two baseball bats can slip the bats through the tops of the wheels and have your bike in the back of a van, or pick-up in 30 seconds. You either need a serious alarm with lojack, or cable it to an immovable object. |

Liquorbox, I don't think anyone here honestly thinks they are going to stop a determined "professional" I think most of us (at least me) just wants to keep people from messing with our bikes. Either a basic alarm like I have, or the tarp method that MollyH uses will usually scare away the curious. For a professional only having insurance will combat that. |
