Okay, here's the low down....

I was riding on Sunday, just 2 days after I had the Neutral Indicator Switch and Sidestand bolt replaced. I rode for 54 miles, got gas, and noticed 3 FIST SIZED POOLS OF OIL under my bike. WTF???? Out of NOWHERE, I'm leaking oil. It looks like it's leaking from the oil lines from the reservoir or something. Beyond that... my race kit exhaust is JACKED!!!! It looks like burnt lasagna. SO, my ENTIRE rear end is COVERED in oil. Tyre, rear brake pads, idler pulley, BELT, pretty much EVERYTHING behind the oil lines from the engine. (Feed line)

Took it to the dealership, got a phone call today, they said that the Mech said, not to charge me cause it was his fault (whatever it was) Picked it up, they didn't change the brake pads, and the mech who did the "work" was gone. They don't know EXACTLY what he did till tomorrow. After I bickered with the service mgr. some mech came out and said that the brakes would be fine. B.S.!! I said whatever and left. Got home(10 miles) and my bike is leaking oil from the feed line (slowly) and my rear brake is SHOT. Pads are saturated and do not work.

Called them and they said bring it in and "we'll figure it out."

What the hell do you think caused this in the first place AND would this affect the belt and any other parts I should be leary of? Plus, are all the parts affected by this OIL BLOWOUT covered under warranty as well? Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion they topped off my reservoir with oil and not synthetic. Could that be a problem, as well?

I need help so when I take my ride in tomorrow, I know what I'm saying. ANY advice would be welcomed.
I thought about contacting Court, but, I thought that I would take this avenue of approach first.

Thanks, badwebbers

I'd only be speculating on what the problem is so I won't even go there except to say I have heard of the oil lines being stripped at the cooler before. As for the belt I doubt it will damage it but just guessing....

As for the dealership, try to be calm and see what there next move is, I am sure they want to fix the problem, I would want new rear brake pads myself.

Yeah..

As I understand it... I believe that they are going to replace the rear brake pads. Here's a sidebar to that... I had recently upgraded my pads to Carbon Lorraines instead of the stock sets. I know that they will just replace with the stock pads. Irritating. Where I see the oil coming from is the feed line near the rear of the exhaust and directly under the middle of the exhaust at those joints.

I'm totally calm, and where I feel grateful, is that my warranty expires in March. So, at least it's covered under warranty. But, it seems that all they did was wipe the oil off and call me to pick it up. That's just frustrating.

Anyway, I agree with you Bake... stay calm and await the next move. I honestly believe that they want to fix the problem. I do. But, it's disheartening when you show up and NO ONE can tell you what was done to your bike!!

That bothers me.

Relax, mang. Same thing happened to mine. What it was on mine was an over torqued line at the factory, replaced under warranty. NO QUESTIONS ASKED..

You don't have warranty issues. You have a dealer and crappy tech issues.

Here's an update...

I wrote the GM of New River, and explained everything and my issues and concerns and how I felt this should be handled as far as my exhaust (which is new) and my brakes and all my stuff that was ruined or damaged from the oil.

Got a call from the dealership 2 hours later and the mech who did the work initially appologized and said that the oil had been coming from the Neutral Ind. Switch which wasn't tightened and that's where he thinks it came from and said he was sorry for missing it. Beyond that, they are coming to pick up my bike, put a new pipe from the last kit they have on my bike, get new brakes and what ever else needs done or fixed to be handled. Or as they put it, "make it right." I am truly impressed and relieved. So, they'll be here tomorrow and we'll see what happens after that.

New questions. The idler pulley and belt are covered with the oil and basically slicker than snot. Is this an issue? Is the belt going to be okay? Or should it be looked at as well?

Court, if you out there, chime in.

To make a long story short, by contacting management and actually telling them what's happening, these issues seem to be getting resolved better than I could have ever imagined.

I am a strong believer that customer service starts at the ground floor and management seems to be left out of it until things get too out of control.

I'll keep ya posted on what happens after all of this is over.

Semper Fi devil dog.

I would make sure that you tell them to look at the belt, and replace the brake pads with the same ones that you had on. Other then that, let the dealership's response dictate your next course of action.

Sorry to hear about your experience, but on a positive note. It sounds like a great chance for someone with a XB9 to nego. a great deal for a race kit with a used/tarnished can. I am sure the dealer would love to unload it...probably let it go cheap, but you would want to strip and re-paint the can before installing. One can of high temp stove paint and you will be good to go.

Having been in Management for a number of years, I always have to try to remember that I seem to be left out of the customer service loop until things are usually so OUT OF CONTROL that things have to be REPLACED, not fixed. I understand it though. You hate having to go to your boss about EVERYTHING. But, we as bosses actually would like to be a bit more involved instead of always being told that everything is okay, right up until the moment that an atom bomb of furied customer comes your way.

There's no more worse feeling than hearing this..."there's a customer that has asked to speak with management, sir." At that point, you usually know that it's gonna be a bad time. And whenever I come across those moments in my own life, such as this one with Harley, I try to take that into consideration. Usually, they seem to be even more relieved to not hear some screaming lunatic on the other end and are more willing to do whatever it takes to KEEP you in that great mood.

I always try to keep this thought in my head. If I scream at some kid behind the counter of taco bell, I'm probably gonna end up with some sort of thick green/filmy bodily fluid in my burrito. So, if I scream at someone that I want to fix my bike. They may just treat it like that burrito. Oh, they'll fix it, but that's about all they'll do and you may end up with some green bodily fluid crammed in there, metaphorically speaking.

Plus, you hate to get the kid in trouble, and you hope they were light on him. It was however, just an accident. An accident that is gonna cost them a lot of money and time lost, but it was an accident, nonetheless. We're all human, and they seem to be stepping up to the plate.

I gave my Cyclone belt a good and thorough oil soaking (FL1A oil filter's hardly *ever* auto rotate off) and had no issues. Traded the bike in with close to 30k miles and the belt might as well have been new. Which is a good thing on an M2, as it is a PITA to replace them.
