I always thought the 9's were the testbed for the new 1200 motors. The engine went through a major re-design (in '03?) so instead of starting it out with the power of a 1200, bring it down to a 900 so as not to loose credibility in case of problems. HD did the same thing when they came out with the new 5-sp. tranny (mid 80's?)-- they started it out on a reduced displacment to make sure the tranny held up. Nothing wrong with the 9's, but it's hard to make up for 300cc, especially on a twin! |

Didn't the 9's stop last year in Europe? |

I have an XB9R and love it. Think I prefer it to the 12, actually. Hmm...well, I've always loved the exclusivity of riding Buell. Maybe now I'll have the sense of being even more special -- I'm riding one of the great XBs that's no longer produced. |

shortly after shaking my 8 ball, and asking it a series of questions I have come up with the greatest intel. BIGGER IS BETTER Buell has to be dropping the 9 from the line (I know you like my rhymes) because the 12 is going to be the new junior sized engine, and were going to get a 14 or bigger engine with a six speed tranny!!! Well at least thats what the 8 ball seems to think. |

i got a 9R too and the 12R was nothing to give me reason to buy a 12R. i think they need to come oiut wit a liquid cooled engine. or a rotary engine. that is agreat engine and no one is using it. just dribe a mazda and you know its got power. |

The first Buell I rode was a 2003 9R and althought I bought a new Ss, I'm definately going to have a 9R in the garage by May. Between Bud and DaveS's help, I think that won't be a problem. |

Single rotor .6 liter 130hp would be interesting |

How about the super ball engine? That would be awesome to see in a bike. |

A rotary would be cool. The 40 mile tank range would not. Buell should stick with V-twins. |

I'll personally drive to Bads1's house and wash his feet if the next motor isn't a V-Twin. |

I love the 9, too. The 12 certainly rocks with that thick wad of low end and midrange torque, but after riding both, the 9 just felt right. For Buell to take that route, and increase bore size relative to stroke, may actually produce greater HP/cu. in. than increasing stroke beyond the 12's 3 13/16". The XBRR's big 4.08 bore coupled with a stroke around 3 5/8" might be about as big as things could get and still work well as an air cooled engine. Obviously, Ducati and every one else is building larger displacement machines at the top of their respective lines, proving that the market does enjoy big wide torque bands; big is good. I'd just like it if a bigger Buell engine delivered that much more in that sweet 5000-7500 range, then shifted into sixth.}} |

Ahhhhh, conjecture! I'll start off by saying I know diddle about what's coming. So, they're dumping the 9. So that means... the 12 is the new 9. So there's going to be something to replace the 12. Something bigger, probably. Maybe a detuned 1350? That'd be nice. Maybe they'll say "sod it" and stuff an X1 motor in there. Who knows? Not me, that's for sure. I do know that I can't wait for it, whatever it turns out to be. Bob |

I really don't see the 12 taking the place of the 9. Buell doesn't sell all that many Firebolts to begin with, and I'm sure the 9 is less popular model. In fact, I don't know that I've ever seen a Firebolt 9 at my dealership (plenty of 9 Lightenings though). Perhaps they're just getting rid of a model that doesn't sell well - it does happen like that sometimes. When Buell dumped the S3Tm I'm sure people thought a new sports tourere was on the way, but alas, there was not. It didn't sell well, so they stopped making it. Pure economics. |

For what it is worth a friend in the military with a military harley purchase plan mentioned trying to get a XB14. He said it was limited production. The guy doesn't know much about bikes to be making it up, so it may very well be true. Also, progress is larger, look at the harley line. They are all 96 inch motors now up from 88 for the last 8 or so years. But with buell only selling a limited amount of bikes, also dropping some products and services such as BRAG, and the race kit... (gee keep making the air filter and ecm, but stop making the pipe, go figure) they may be dumping it. |

Well, if they're to be discontinued, I'm glad I bought one when I could. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a new XLCR when it sat in the local showroom for over a year, and every time I came in, it got cheaper and better looking. Similar situation; a good machine with insufficient demand. Xl1200r, ya nailed it; the bottom line decides.}} |

I'm fortunate enough to have a 9 & a 12 and I love them both equally - like children, joy! Seriously, I definitely ride more aggressively on the 9. It's mental no doubt, still trying to figure it out. Hey I rhyme! |

There might be something to that XB14 story. It's Buell's anniversary in 08 and a limited production bike to celebrate would make logical sense - done on the cheap, relatively speaking but yet still sparking interest. It's looking more and more like something more radical is still a few years away. |
