I posted this in the KV but am really not getting much. Plus, it seems there is more traffic here on the XBoard. You all are pretty knowledgeable so here it is....

Okay, I am going to try to make this as straight forward as possible. I installed the Buell Race Kit on my 05 XB9R the other day.... Hauled it into the dealer, they reset the TPS and all that, rode it home, thought I heard some popping/backfiring on Decel but couldn't be for sure. Rode it around the next day and I did hear the noise I thought I was hearing. It is popping speratically on decel. No soot at the exhaust tips. The connection between the exhaust and header is good. I took the snorkel out, put the race filter in, didn't chop up my inner air box. Infact, it's still on there. I have a feeling that it's running lean because the noise is on decel, but hell, I just don't know.

If I ride the bike in say 2nd or 3rd or whatever gear to about 4500-5000 and back it off, it's like 4th of July. I have no idea what's going on. It just seems like it's running lean by the popping on decel but I just don't see how. Unless this is normal after adding the race kit. I'm afraid to do an openairbox kit for fear I'll be running it even leaner!! Am I wrong?

If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Mark

The popping won't hurt anything, just take it back to the dealership sometime and have them reset the TPS.

I ran an open airbox, K&N and modified stock exhaust for 18k with it popping the entire time. Plugs always were a perfect light brown, opened up the top end and everything looked great.

Some on here will say I am crazy but I know of 5 or 6 XB's here in the KC area with a very similar setup to mine and no one has had any problems.

Just remember to check your plugs, they always tell you the true story.

we have gone through all of this a zillion times

1- take it back to the dealer- something really wrong, etc
2- you are now "too lean" and your motor is about to explode
3- your TPS and muffler bearings are in need of a reset

Truth is, I guess theoretically it could be one of a zillion things, but for my time- I would make sure the exhaust junction between the header and collector (under the chin fairing) has a nice layer of exhaust sealer(Permatex, grey- any auto parts store has it)> 99% problem solved

good luck

Go run above 3500 rpm's for a few miles let the race ECM learn a bit. The race kit does pop some the one on my 9 here does a bit.

This was once explained to me. I can't remember exactly what was said word for word but the gist of it was this:

Make sure the clamp over where the header enters the muffle is sealed well. If it's not high enough & not covering the slot properly air will leak in & make any unburned fuel in the muffler really lean & it will ignite just from the heat of the muffler & make that popping sound.

On edit: A little popping is normal as there will always be traces of unburned fuel that will detonate. This happens with the stock pipe as well but we don't hear it because it's muffled.
A lot of popping is probably because the clamp needs to be moved to a better position. This is the best place to start.
