147db, thats great info! love the redesigns too what media are you printing on to then layer over the sanded stock dash? yesterday i picked up some transparent film with an adhesive backing to adhere to a matte white base. not sure how my experiment will work out but i've also got some other film on order as well as a few hooks into people who could custom die-cut/print new backgrounds for me. still need to take my dash apart to see everything first hand though. not quite enough time yet.. . thanks for sharing your work, i dig it. |

The media is a kind of "white ultra-thin self-adhesive printable" film, I'll try to take some pics of it later... |

I pulled the dash on my Uly with the intent of replacing the lamps with colored ones but I was unable to find any of the same type. Has anyone else had better luck? don |

147db can you send me a copy of the .psd? I was thinking, could the black film be backed with a foil? This should take care of "bleed through". |

my plan for the test run was to print the design on the white backing layer, then print again on the adhesive, clear top layer. attempting to 'double-up' the ink to prevent bleed-through. this is only for my test though, i talked to another contact today that does a lot of industrial design, we looked as some nice matte PVC that could be printed and die-cut. that's ultimately where i'm headed but i'm not sure about cost yet. the samples he showed me were backed with heavy ink so the top layer had rich color. very nice. |

unfortunately i got slammed with 'real' work this week, no time to follow up with my leads i did a little work on another option tonight but i need to get some stuff out the door before digging back in. one of my clients gave me a sample (PVC mentioned above) to bring to a print house that does custom die-cutting. just need to follow up with them as well as one other contact a friend told me to give a ring. i'll keep you posted.. . looks like i can do a small run of one design for fairly short cash. that may be my test bed. even better if peeps want one more to come over the next week.. . |

hmm, maybe i should create a poll or something to figure out which type of design to print first. i've been fine tuning them all, tighter placement and little better sizing after i saw my test prints here. i need to talk to the print house today for details. this will give me a better idea what cost will look like. i'll keep you guys posted. fingers x'd they have the material i need, sounds like they do. btw, thanks for the interest!! |

I test printed it. I printed out a regular 5X7 and whalaa!! it was a perfect fit. However this was just on paper but it shouldn't matter. M |

right, i shrunk the size on the ones posted in JPG format here. when going from the Illustrator source to print i had to tweak the artboard size as well as my number sizing. RPMs were way too small for my taste. more info later on today.. . |

thanks guys! i spoke to the printer today, they have a sample and my instructions for a backlit application. now i'm waiting to hear back on pricing for a small run. they're also mailing me a sample packet of materials to check out. hoping the process can accommodate design variations within the same template. for now, i need to pick one, not sure which one yet 'cause i'm still tweaking and creating others. here's a variation on #3, straight-up, clean design with white elements being lit up. i'm not finished with the RPM side so thats a little lacking.. . been testing some clear sheets today with this one. prints beautifully but i need to do the backing next and hopefully test this hacked version over the weekend. |

How long till the sponsor gods rain down I wonder. I've already been in contact with Blake (thank you Blake, i have a response on the way). i'm not interested in violating any agreements, copyrights, etc. This will all be thought through and provided in a way that makes sense for everyone... IF what I hope to accomplish works out. 'cause i think they'd look badass. Just printing these on my home printer and selling isn't that great an idea to me. I'd rather get a tight product together and share the cost with other BadWebbers to get 'em done right so they look great and last the life of the bike. If I can use my same template with the printer and make a bunch of variations even better! i'll keep you guys posted. i'm waiting on the print house now. with the holidays around the corner i'm not sure they will get back to me so quick. the contact i spoke with said she would do her best to get me more details today... the sample packet is on its way to me as well. i've got a nice PVC sample in front of me that would work perfect... its the custom die-cutting that will prob kill me. ink palette i kept basic for now. black/white/gray/orange/red. |
