Well guys, Just got the software loaded on a laptop and I can`t seem to get connected to the bike. When I go into the Communications tab up above the only thing there I can do is hit on the port tab.. I can go over and hit on the ECM tab to connect but it comes back with the warning ,,
Check cables ports and so on... Not sure what port I should be on and even how to check that etc.. anyone here give a helping hand? Thanks

It has been awhile for me, but I am pretty sure the ignition has to be on to connect, but does not have to be running.

So I did this:

2. If Microsoft Windows 95,98, ME Operating Systems are in use, use the following steps:
->Start Menu
-> Settings
-> Control Panel
-> System
-> Device Manager Tab
-> Ports (COM & LPT)
*Note Communications Port number that is present or in use

done this and my ports ( com & LPT )
say Communications port say ( com5 )
what does this or tell me to do?

Should I change this port on my laptop or change it on the software when it tries to hook up I think the software says port 1 But I`m lost what to do here on in...

Don`t want to change the laptop but this is the only thing that I will use this laptop for though is to hook up to the bike nothing else I use it for...

1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM/DVD drive of your computer.
2. Form the desktop, double click on My Computer.
3. Double-click on CD-ROM dive containing disk VDSTS.
4. Double-click on the Directory desired.
5. Double-click on Setup.exe file and follow each step for installation.
6. Run program Vehicle Diagnostic Scan Tool Software Standard.
7. Choose the communication serial port number to be used.
If the computer does not have a serial port, a high speed USB to Serial Port Adapter
(Keyspan USA-19HS) is needed.
8. Connect one end of the vehicle interface cable to the serial port or USB to serial adapter
of your computer and the other end to the motorbike data link connector (cables with
clamps connect to motorbike battery).
9. Turn Ignition On.
10. On the Tool Bar click on “ECU/ECM selection”.
11. Select one of the modes from the tool bar (Ex. Gages, Strip Chart,..)
12. On the Tool Bar go to Communication and select connect.

Hmmm done this as well...Damn

Is it a race ECM?

I bought mine from another user on here, and it wouldn't connect to a Race ECM, but would connect to the stock unit.

I sent it back and had it "flashed" to fix it, still haven't tried it yet.

It's been to long, I cannot offer anything useful- Sorry.

Anyways, there was a batch of cables that went out that wouldn't communicate with the Race ECM.

The com port number for the computer and the program should match.
If the device manager says the 9P serial port is configured to com5. The VDSTS program, should also be set to com5.

Ig switch must be on and the engine stop switch should be on.

9p is nine pin. It's just a description of the serial port interface you are using. There is also a 15 pin serial port, thus the reason for stating which one it is.

The com # for your port will be listed under the device manager. In windows, goto the control panel, open system, click the hardware tab, open device manager, click Ports (COM and LTP) and view which port it is set to. Most likely, it will be COM1.

My laptop under Device Manger and then ports says this:

Communications Port ( Com 5 )

Printer Port ( LPT 1 )

Virtual Infrared COM PORT

Virtual Infrared LPT PORT

and thats it nothing else???

Then you need to set vdsts to com 5 when it is looking for the bike. If it still doesn't work, attempt it on a different PC. If it's still a no go, I'd ask your vendor for a replacement.

Well I`ll give that a try but I think I allready tried all ports on the software before Vendor is not an option...
