By the way, that awful oil smell of gear oil is the smell of the extreme pressure (EP) additives of sulphur compounds, not the smell of electrical death (that's a different smell.) I don't know of anyone that can tell if their stator has failed by the smell of the oil...

Yeah -- but you can tell by the burned popcorn smell But by then it's too late

No doubt GL-5 smells bad, but however bad it smells fresh, it smells TWICE that bad after a failed stator. I guess that's the smell of burning sulphur HP additives.

Found out today it WAS the stator that died.
IF they have the parts tomorrow I will find out if it took the rest of the charging system with it.
They also gonna try to get the extended warranty to cover the stripped primary drain case cover.(wich would be bitchin and above and beyond because that happened a couple of years ago)

FACT: There is NO MANUFACTURER THAT RECOMMENDS GL-5 OIL IN YOUR BUELL TRANNY. None, Nada, Zip. Don't you think that if GL-5 oil was okay for use in the tranny, that RP, RedLine, Amsoil, Benke, (ANYONE), ... would say so???

I may be mistaken but, I swear I was told by my dealership that HD SYN3 is acceptable for lube in the motor and tranny.

Now where is my service manual.....

Disturbed,

I was under the impression that after 03, Formula+ is recommended for the tranny.

Not so?

The last time I had my 03 XB9S at the dealer for service he intalled HD SYN3 in both the engine and tranny.
Two months ago.

I was told the same for my 05.

The XB the thread starter has is an 03 from his profile.

Is there a tranny difference from 03 to 05 that I am unaware of?

There was a change on the tranny in 06....

After 03, Formula+ was recommended for the tranny. For 03 and prior, crank case lube was recommended for both holes.

I think they changed the transmission and a weaker clutch spring,(to make the clutch easier to pull in.)
It's my thought that the new transmission oil is formulated to give the clutch better bite, since the spring holding it together is weaker.
Nobody has verified this.
But this is the only reason I can think of to change the type of oil.
The straight synthetic may be too slippery and not allow the clutch to bite.
