Quick question: I have about 7,500 on the XB and there is occasional squeeking from the front brake. Is this about the time to replace the pads? Or could it be from the cold weather? thanks.

My brakes seem to last about 10k miles or so. I just ordered my 2nd set of lyndal golds from Al at American Sport Bike. Brakes last as long as there is nominal pad left on them and riding style affects longevity. See the manual for recommended wear. Squeaking brakes don't usually mean a thing.

Squeaking or squealing is often caused by the pads vibrating in the caliper. There's an anti-rattle shim in there but I always use a smear of Copaslip on the back of the pads and make sure the caliper and cylinders are very clean. If you use brake cleaner be careful not to get any on the wheels, it removes the coating quicker than you can say WTF

As for wear, YMMV but the pads on my Firebolt are worn enough at 4-5000 mi to make me change them. For the price of some new pads and how long it takes to change them it's a no-brainer.

I got almost 20k miles on my fronts. I've got about 10k on my second set with about 50% left. Stock pads.

Try downshifting and using the rear brake more. 5000 miles is ridiculous.

Without wishing to restart the 'brakes are for pussies' thread (RIP) when I changed my OEM pads at less than 5000 miles they were about 1/2 worn. I'd bled the brakes to restore some of the lever feel but they never felt solid enough for me and so I put some EBCs in. Back to normal. Repeat at 10,000 mi.

I rarely ride on any road that's straight or flat, and 5k for the front pads is OK IME.

On the stockers, what is the minimum thickness b4 replacement? Simple enough to measure for sure. thanks

Front pads replaced at 5000 miles. Now at 7500 ml I have worn my clutch. It all depends on your drive style and the kind of road you take.Long highway trips or blasting through town.( City-X 2006)
