'06 city-x with a drummer and open air box. The bike ran great for a month or so with the new pipe and filter, Then on the middle of ride the motor started to miss a little under excel.and the exhaust pops when letting off the gas. This happened the first night we had cooler dry weather in houston instead of the hot humid air. I disconnected my battery and checked all elec. connections and grounds. I then re-installed the stock air box cover with a few added intake holes. So far the problem seems to be gone. Could the open filter be overkill on the 984,s and force in to much air? |

I have found that my bike runs better with the stock airbox lid at low altitude, and with an open airbox at high altitude, such as 4000 feet or higher. My airbox is convertible, I swiss cheesed it and covered the holes with duct tape so I can open it up on the mountain. More air to the throttle body will make the bike run slightly hotter, other than that I can't think of anything. If the motor gets hot enough the ECM will start interrupting the ignition to cool the bike down. It would have to be REALLY hot though... |

I would think it is running plenty lean then. |

PS I would also check for an intake leak |

My 9R wouldn't run properly with an open airbox before I put the race ECM in. You're not getting fuel to match the air, get a race ecm or run the stock airbox. |

What about running '07 airbox/K&N with everything else stock? Is it only the open airbox that causes the issue? --Sean |

it's the combination of airbox mods and exhaust mods. You are letting in more air, you are letting out more air. You need something to give the bike more gas. Race ecm or DL tuning Sean, you should be fine |

Okay thanks. I had the race kit on, but the combination of noise (I live in a beach comunity with bored officers), and the power dip where I ride was enough for me to trade the race kit mufler for the stocker. I kept the K&N and Race ECM, but didn't like the hesitation with the Race ECM, so I removed it and put the stock ECM back in. So now I have the stock pipe, stock ECM, K&N filter, and '07 airbox. Seems to be running fine, but I know I'll need the '07 calibration at my next service. Just wanted to make sure this setup was okay to run. --Sean |
