I own a 05xb12scg. I cant beleive I am even in this situation but I am. I LOVE my bike. I bought it in OCT 05 and I have 14K miles on it. I ride it EVERY chance I can. I have never been so completely happy with something I have bought. Here is my situation. I am going to Japan for 3 yrs (Iwakuni). I hear the riding over there where I will be at is some of the best riding anywhere(lots of mountains). I am very excited to go there and ride. However Its is going to cost around 2000 plus to get it legal to ride in Japan. I cant beleive I am going to ask this but should I sell it before I go, and pick up something there? Or should I fork out the money and get it registered there? Any opinions or ideas? This sucks! | ||

Take the 2-G's it would cost you to get the XB to Japan and buy a cheapie to beat on there! Store the XB for your return home..... Good Luck PM Clark | ||

Make sure you climb Mt Fuji!! Sale the XB, buy the beater like Percyo said, and right before you come back to the World go to the base PX and see if you can order a brand new 2010 Buell and have it waiting at the dealer of your choice when you get back tax free!! You are going to have a GOOD time in Japan. I spent 3 months on Okinawa and 3 months at Camp Fuji. Lots of things to see and do!! Make sure you take in as much as you can. Getting to see the world and being paid to do it. Its all good....Japan is one of the few places I'd like to see again. | ||

I disagree. Bite the bullet, ship your bike. You will have memories to last a lifetime, and the bike will still be with you to prove it! Think about telling your grandkids how you rode that bike all over Japan! $2000 is peanuts compared to all the good times you will have. Sure you could buy a beater, but will you really have FUN on it? Will you be proud to ride it? Will you be turning every head on the street with your telegraphed approach, rattling windows and getting all the girls excited? You know the japanese have a keen eye for all things American... you'll be the bees knees over there. Do it. You won't be sorry. Scrape the money together. | ||

Man things have changed; when I was in Korea in '71, we couldn't have P.O.V.'s let alone, a motorcycle! Kimchi cabs & buses that's all there was for non-duty transportation. First thing is make sure you are even allowed to have a P.O.V. on base. And, if you can, crunch the numbers to determine whether to store, sell or take the bike with you. | ||

Korea is different from Japan...You still can't have a pov in Korea unless you are and E-6 or above. In Japan it is different. I am curious as to why it will cost $2000 to get it legal to ride it in Japan? What has to be done to it? "Sure you could buy a beater, but will you really have FUN on it? Will you be proud to ride it? Will you be turning every head..." If you're a good enough rider you will. Some of the Japanese domestic motorcycles are awesome!!! and handle better than any other bike on the road with the exception of the MotoGP machines (but they aren't street legal anyway). True you can modify and make it better but... I would take the XB because of the fun factor and torque factor and the fun factor...oh yea the fun factor! After spending 6 years in Japan and Okinawa, I would love to go back and take my XB12R back to the roads I used to ride on and compare it to the Japanese bikes I had while I was there!!! | ||

Do you have a trusted friend who could store it for you? By trusted - I mean somebody who's not going to write you a letter starting out "I hate to tell you but I took the bike out in traffic JUST ONE TIME and you'd never guess what happened..." Just run it once in a while ... and not charge you storage? Just asking | ||

Ship the bike, spend the two grand. Climb Fuji, get out a lot. Do not get stuck on base! Pick up the lingo, see Tokyo, See Harajuku! Go to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Get pictures of you and the Buell in front of Kawasaki it's a City!) signs Etc. Then Sell the Buell and Buy a 2010 on the way home like Wolf said. Difference is some JN will pay you 15 K for your "Rare american sport bike" before you come home. If not another serviceman will at least get you to break even... For god sakes be careful, they drive on the wrong side of the road, and you never know when you'll come around a corner and have a sign in the middle of your lane. (I'm not kidding, regular post and sign a foot into the road. It's a frightening drive at times) | ||

Try to do some snooping and see how much the Buell will be worth in Japan. You might be able to take it over ride it for a year or two and sell it for a profit. Then use that money to buy a Nissan Skyline (they're suppose to be "relatively" cheap over there) and bring that back with you. Just looking at the prices on Buell's Japanese site I think a new XB12Scg costs about 1,450,000 yen which is over $12,300 so it would seem that if the shipping is free then the bike will be worth the extra $2,000. Sell it or store it, that is the question. After it's all said and done and you have crunched the numbers you are going to find that it is just best to try and sell it first. If it doesn't sell, store it. You know as well as I know that you are going to be busy over there. I am one of the few people who have actually been stationed there in the recent past. Don't ship it. It's really going to be more of a hassle than you could possibly imagine. By the way... A SKYLINE is not that cheap. I don't know what the others have heard but even if you saved all your nickels and all your dimes you wouldn't be able to afford one. Besides, they are coming to america to be sold soon anyways under the lexus name because of the price. Back to the bike. You ship it there, plus you gotta ship it back. That's 4000 dollars, now. TMO is not going to ship it there or back. There isn't a Buell out there worth the monthly payments plus shipping you will have to spend just to ride a bike that might keep up with the rest. That being said, I can just hear all the uproar about keeping up and all that. What I'm trying to say is.. you can sell the bike, make a reasonable profit, say... maybe a thousand dollars, apply that to a down on a pretty good bike over there that some other marine is selling. (see, they are gonna want to get rid of it quick. They wanna leave just as bad) Figure you are there for 3 years and you have it paid off in a couple of years and when you sell it, you have a profit to go back and buy a new bike when you get to the states. Remember the acronym K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) Do just that. Keep it simple. You are gonna have enough on your plate checkin in to a new duty station and all of that and finding out if you unit is deploying soon and all of that. Good luck, man And Semper Fi. Mark | ||

If you're a good enough rider you will. I disagree, I am a capable rider and I get bored on just about anything other than my XB. I have a Blast as well and I get bored on it after about 5 min. I would take the bike! | ||

Keep an eye out for the cops..when I was there, some of them drove 300zx's and then they would put up a life size, very life like dummy holding a radar gun....then a few days would go by...bang...real cop...real ticket... | ||

(Different brand altogether) They will be called the Nissan GT-R. For some time Infiniti was considered to badge the car but it was decided that it would remain under the Nissan name but they would not call it a Skyline. "A SKYLINE is not that cheap. I don't know what the others have heard but even if you saved all your nickels and all your dimes you wouldn't be able to afford one." Depends on the year and trim you are looking for. If your looking to by the GT-R, you are correct. You could buy an R-32 GT-R if you can find one relatively cheap compared to what a new on costs but still much more than $2K. But also keep in mind that if you find a Skyline you like and it is more than 25 years old (it will cost you) you can import it into the us with no epa issues because it is exempt. Keep the bike and take it with you especially if TMO will ship it with household goods. (They do if for those in the Air Force!!!) | ||

Since you are getting your biked shipped over for free does it include return shipping? And if so, would they notice if the bike you brought back was not the same bike? Never know, you might find something really unique over there that would be rarer than hen's teeth here in the states. | ||

it doesn't matter what bike or how many bikes you ship. in either direction. it's all based on weight. the higher your rank the more weight you can ship. the only thing i can think of that you'd need to change would be the lights. just think, you don't have to move the steering wheel to the other side.... ? | ||
